DINWIDDIE CO., VIRGINIA PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX LIST:
The first year in which personal property tax lists are available for Virginia counties is 1782. Isham Reese is in the Dinwiddie Co. personal property tax list every year from 1782 until 1794. He usually has 5 or 6 horses, and the number of slaves varies from 5 to 9. He has about 15 head of cattle. In 1792 another free white male over 16 is in his household. He is Wmson Reese. In 1794 Williamson Reese and Isham Reese Jun are additional free white males over 16 in Isham's household.
Williamson is not a common given name. Because Williamson and Isham are the first two names in the list of children in the will of the Isham Reese who died in 1816 in Jones Co., Georgia, it is highly likely that the Isham in the Dinwiddie tax lists and the Isham who died in 1816 are the same person.
DINWIDDIE CO., VIRGINIA LAND TAX LIST:
The first year in which land tax lists are available for Virginia counties is 1782. Isham Reese is in the Dinwiddie Co. land tax list from 1782 until 1794. He owns 476 acres valued at 9/1 (9 shillings 1 penny) per acre. That is the highest valuation per acre in the lists. The total value is £216 3s 8d and his tax is about £3 5s. In 1795 his brother Jordan is taxed on that land. It was conveyed to him by Isham, presumably in preparation for Isham's move to Georgia.

In 1792 Isham had a son (Williamson) who was over 16. That son probably became 16 in about 1792 and was thus born in about 1776 since 1792 was the first year in which Isham had had another male over 16 in his household. Williamson was probably Isham's eldest son. That suggests that Isham was born in 1756 or earlier. '1748' written in the margin of his will would be reasonable. We do not not know when or why or by whom '1748' was written in the margin.
The family Bible of Isham's son Cuthburt Reese states that Isham was born in August 1748.
WILL:
Isham Reese's will can be seen in the probate records of Jones Co., Georgia at Familysearch.org, "Probate records, 1808-1949", "Transcribed wills; v. A-D 1809-1864", pgs 37-39, images 53-54/387. This will is among wills transcribed in 1937 from Will Books A, B, and C. Isham's wife is Susanah, and his children are Williamson, Isham, Cudburth, Joseph, John, Susanah, Sarah, Patrick, Henry, and Jordan, listed in that order. "Born 1748. A Methodist minister" has been written in the margin of the will.
In the name of God Amen I Isham Reese Senior of State of Georgia and County of Jones being very Sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory and calling unto mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die do make and ordain this my last will and testament that is to Say principally and first of all I recommend my Soul into the hands of Almighty God that gave it and my body to be buried in a plain Christian manner and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it has pleased God [to] bless me in this life I give demise[sic] and dispose of the same in the following manner and form
First I give unto my beloved wife Susanah one good feather bed and furniture one good riding horse to be provided for her by my executors and five negroes namely Cubit and his wife Blanche Harriot Aree and Phillie to be hers during her natural life or widowhood and if She Should marry then the above negroes and their increase to revert back to my estate and my executors to allow her a comfortable Support out of the Same during her life. 2 I give unto my beloved children Viz Williamson Isham Cudburth Joseph, John, Susanah, Sarah, Patrick, Henry and Jordan all my personal estate to be equally divided between them in the following manner and with the following exceptions that is to Say those that has already received from me Some portion of my estate Shall as near as possible ascertain the value of the same and calculate it in the general amount and for it to be as so much to each one on their part and for none of the negroes to be Sold out of the family in order to make the division
3d I give unto my son Williamson that part of my estate that may fall to him in the general division only during his natural life if he dies heirless and in that case the property I give him Shall return to my estate and be equally divided among my heirs.
4th I give unto my daughter Susanah that part of my estate that may fall to her in the general division during her natural life and at her death to be equally divided amongst her children unless She Should remove out of this State and upon conditions of so removing the property Shall be under the direction of my executors to be given to her children when they become of age and in the place of the girl Minei which She now has in case She Shall have five hundred dollars paid her in hand that is if she does remove out of this State
I do hereby appoint constitute and ordain my sons Williamson, Isham, Cudberth, Joseph & John the Sole executors of this my last will and testament in witness whereof I have hereunto Set my hand and Seal this twenty second day of October in the year of our lord one thousand Eight hundred and fifteen. N.B Interlined before assigned Signed Sealed and acknowledged in the presence of us the day and date above writen.
