General Notes: Husband - James Silver

The following is on pages 57-58 of McCurdy Pioneers of North America by Clyde W. McCurdy and published in 1990:

"The first settler in Cumberland County was said to be James Silver. A booklet, James Silver and His Community (published in Carlisle, Pennsylvania in 1969) states that James Silver, the first settler in the Cumberland Valley went into the area in 1724. He was not listed as an Indian trader, although it was said of him "that he lived peaceably with the Indians." He was one of the men responsible for the formation of Cumberland County, and the area in which he lived was known as "Silvers Spring." The Silver Spring Presbyterian Church was later established there. James Silver must also have been a close friend of John McCurdy and his family. They lived only a few miles from each other and, as stated earlier, James Silver married Margaret, the widow of John McCurdy. Margaret was James Silver's second wife."

The following is from the website of the Silver Spring Presbyterian Church (http://www.silverspring.org/beliefs):

"In the early 1700's, a number of pioneers, most Presbyterians of Scotch-Irish descent, began to cross over the Susquehanna River to settle in the Cumberland valley. Notable among them were James and Hannah Silver, whose natural spring became the gathering place for many of those early faithful.

"The first recorded meeting of "the people over the Susquehanna," as they were then known, occurred in the fall of 1734. Shortly thereafter a small log meeting house was erected near the present site and served the people for half a century. Construction of a new "Meiting House" was completed in 1784 in the simple yet exquisite style of the day. It is in that same church building that we continue to worship to this day."

General Notes: Wife - Margaret

The following is on page 45 of McCurdy Pioneers of North America (Clyde W. McCurdy, 1990)

"John McCurdy's first wife is unknown and the last name of Margaret, his second wife, is unknown, but we do know that after John died, Margaret later married James Silver by whom she had three sons: James, William, and John. Her second husband, James Silver, died in 1776, and she remarried for the third time, in 1787, to William Patton."

Clyde W. McCurdy says that John McCurdy's second wife was much younger than he was, and he further says, "One document also indicates that two of his children were from this marriage, because Jean who is thought to be the youngest daughter is referred to as a full sister of Robert."

If Margaret had 2 children before her husband's death in 1761, they probably married in about 1756. We can estimate that she was born in roughly 1725.
