In Morgan Co., Georgia on 4 Feb 1833 Thomas Crawford and John Robson, administrators of the estate of Joseph Reese, "late of this County deceased", and four others are held and firmly bound unto the Justices of the Inferior Court in the sum of $90000.

After the death of Joseph Reese his minor children are treated as orphans despite the fact that his wife is alive and remarries in 1841. Dr. Elijah E. Jones, a physician, is the guardian of Susan T., Francis C., and Joseph Reese, and John Robson, a merchant, is the guardian of Martha E., Lucy M., and Amanda J. Reese. There are numerous references to the reports of Elijah E. Jones and John Robson in Volumes J & K of the Administration and Guardian Records (1834-1842) of Morgan Co.

TAX RECORDS:

Tax records are available for Morgan Co. for 1808-10, 1812, 1817, 1818, 1820, 1823, 1824, 1826, 1829, 1830, 1832, 1838, 1840, and later. The following entry for 1820 is an example:

1820 -- Rece Joseph in Capt. Hubbard's District, image 525/592:
19 Morgan; 244 607.5 -- -- Sugar; Peneck Anderson; 1 poll, 23 slaves, 1 2wc, $9.51875

The image number refers to a file available online from familysearch.org. '19' is a district number. It is not the same as the district associated with Capt. Hubbard. 'Morgan' is the county of residence or the county where land is located. '244' is a number associated with land; I do not know its significance. In this entry there are 607.5 acres of first quality land, 0 acres of second quality land, and 0 acres of third quality land. The land is in the watershed of Sugar Creek, adjoins lands belonging to Peneck, and was granted to Anderson. Joseph Rece pays for 1 poll, 23 slaves, and one 2-wheeled carriage. He pays 9 dollars, 51 cents, and 8 3/4 mils. 'un' means 'unknown'.

The Apalachee River forms most of the eastern boundary of Morgan Co. It separates Morgan Co. from Greene Co. Jacks Fork is a small tributary of Sugar Creek somewhat upsteam from the confluence of Sugar Creek and the Oconee River and downstream from the confluence of Sugar Creek and Little Sugar Creek.

ORDER OF CHILDREN:

The birth dates that we have indicate that in the distribution of Negroes recorded on July 12, 1834 the children are listed in approximately descending age order. I am going to assume that the order is exact.
