General Notes: Wife - Margaret Jane Grinstead
FIRST MARRIAGE:
Margaret J. Grinstead married Jesse Hopper in Madison County 11 Jan 1855. According to the census there is only one Margaret Grinstead in Madison Co. in 1850. There is no Jesse Hopper in Madison Co. in 1850. There are 2 male Hoppers: William, 22, with a wife and a very young child, and George Hopper, 13, who is living very close to William in the household of John T. Amerine (22, Madison, Ky, farmer), who is probably a younger brother of Eliza Amerine, the wife of Margaret's uncle Mathew D. Grinstead. A cursory search of the census reveals one or two men in Kentucky who might be the required Jesse Hopper.
By 1860 Jesse Hopper has probably died, because Margaret Hopper (25, Ky, seamstress, --/$10) is living in the household of Elizabeth Webber (280/277) in Madison Co. (post office Elliston) with Elizabeth Hopper (4, Ky), presumably her daughter. Not far away Smith Grinstead lives at (301/298), and Joel Grinstead (20, Ky, farm labor) is in the household of John F. Emorine at 302/299. A George Harper (23, Ky, farm labor) also lives with John F. Emorine. This George Harper is obviously the George Hopper who was living in the same household 10 years earlier.
In 1870 Maggie Harper (30, Ky, housekeeper) is living in Georgetown in Scott Co., Kentucky in the household of Belle Fitzpatrick (26, keeping house) with her daughter Bettie Harper (18, going to school).
