WHO WAS HIS FATHER?
Marshall was born in Culpeper Co. or was brought there from Fauquier Co. as a small child, or he came to Culpeper Co. as a young adult. Who are the older men in either Culpeper Co. or in Fauquier Co. who are young enough to be Marshall's father? Four of them are the sons of Joseph II: John, Joseph III, William and James. William and James married after Marshall was born. A deposition provides a list of John's children. Only Joseph III is a possibility. Other men can be eliminated in a similar fashion as either impossible or improbable.
Marshall's given name is probably the maiden name of his mother.
