General Notes: Husband - Baltis Hinkle

CHILDREN:

A biographical sketch of Baltis's eldest son William written in the mid-1890's indicates that Baltis had 5 children (William, John, Alexander, Catherine, and Baltis in that order) and that he died at age 30 when William was 6 years old. That suggests that he was born about 1797 and died in 1827. He married in January 1820. His youngest child Baltis D. consistently said that he was born in Tennessee. After Baltis's death, his widow left Alabama and went to Wayne Co., Tennessee to live with her father. It seems likely that Baltis died in late 1827 and that his pregnant widow was in Tennessee by the time Baltis D. was born in May 1828. In 1830 she was living in her father's household in Wayne Co. That census does confirm the existence of 5 children, and the 1840 census is consistent with it.

William, John, and Baltis appear in the 1850 census, and Catherine is in the 1860 census. Alexander signed a power of attorney in 1847, but nothing further is known of him.

A biographical sketch of Baltis's grandson George Coleman Hinkle published in 1894 says the following, speaking specifically of Baltis's son John: "His parents were Walter and Annie (Downing) Hinkle, South Carolinians by birth, who were married in Tennessee, and later removed to Madison County, Ala., in which State the father died in 1827. His widow then returned to Wayne County, Tenn., and there John Hinkle was reared. He was a cabinet maker and wood workman, and was about thirty years of age at the time of his death. His widow died in Wayne County, Tenn., about 1850."

LAND IN ALABAMA:

October 5, 1847 -- The heirs of Batts Hinkel, dec'd, nominate and appoint Jonathan D. Downing their attorney in fact to sell a 79 acre tract in Madison Co., Alabama located in section 18 township 1 range 2 west. It is confusingly described as the north half of the south quarter section. The witnesses are Jno. D. Hinkle and Jesse Downing, and the document is signed by T. S. Emerson, Ann Emerson, William Hinkle, Francis C. Hinkle, Alexander Hinkle, John Hinkle, Jesse Gifford, and Katharine Gifford in that order. (Bk F, pgs 202-03, Wayne Co., Tennessee Deed Records)

October 27, 1849 -- Jonathan J. Downing of the state of Tennessee, acting as attorney in fact for the heirs of Baltis Kinkle [sic], dec'd, sells to D. C. Hamilton of the state of Alabama for $125 a tract of 79 acres, more or less, which is the N 1/2 of SW 1/4 of section 18 in T1 R2W in Madison Co., Alabama. (Bk X, pgs 438-39, Madison Co., Alabama Deed Records)

WALTER BALTIS?

The biograpahical sketch of George Coleman Hinkle cited above says that his grandfather was Walter Hinkle. He might have been Walter Baltis or Baltis Walter; or the writer may have been mistaken and his name was simply Baltis.

General Notes: Wife - Ann Downing

The following is in a biographical sketch of Ann's eldest son William Hinkle.

By trade the father of our subject was a carpenter. He died in Alabama when our subject was about six years old, at the age of thirty years. William was the oldest in the family of five children, the others being John, Alexander, Catherine and Baltis; but himself and John are the only ones now living. After the death of Mr. Hinkle his widow returned to the home of her parents, Andrew and Elizabeth (Jones) Downing, whose children were: Mary, John, Catherine, Annie, William, James, Sarah and Jonathan. Mr. Downing died in Tennessee, in 1844, at the ripe old age of seventy-eight years. For her second husband the mother of our subject wedded Tyrance Emerson, by whom she had five children. Her death also occurred in Tennessee, in the fall of 1855, at the age of fifty years.
