General Notes: Husband - Joseph Walton

The following, slightly reformatted to improve readability, is from Byberry Waltons (Norman Walton Swayne, 1958), pg 30:

46 JOSEPH WALTON (4), born probably around 1730, probably alive
1790, son of 7 Joseph Walton & Sarah, probably Roberts, of Byberry Twp, Phila. Co., Pa., married Barbara. The History of Byberry and Moreland says Joseph, son of Nathaniel, taught school at Byberry 15 years, then moved to Falls, where he followed his profession and is said to have taught 60 years in all. Also it says he died 10th mo 4th 1759. However, the revised version remarks that either this date is incorrect or the facts are confused. Both seem to be true. The above date of death was that of 7 Joseph.

46 Joseph certainly was a schoolmaster, being so called in the 1779 and 1780 deeds below. Joseph is on tax lists of Bibury 1769 for 80 acres 2 horses 3 cattle tax 9.6.8, 1774 for 80 acres 2 horses 3 cattle one servant tax 10.2.8, 1779 d tax 14, also 1779 d tax 3.10.0, 1780 Joseph Sr valuation 1800 tax 45.0.0, 1782 valuation 382 tax 2.15.5, 1783 schoolmr 85 acres 3 horses 2 cattle 6 sheep. Joseph Sr was tax collector for Bibury in 1779 for the state or 5 shillings tax but not for the other. It may be he is the Joseph of Bucks Co., Pa. in the 1790 census, head of a family of one male over 16 and two females.

13 Nov. 1764 Joseph of Byberry Twp & wife Barbara deeded to Boaz Walton for 320 pounds 70 acres, part of the 161 acres their father had held there, which 46 Joseph had rec'd 8 Nov. 1764 from his sisters and brothers, William Francies & wife Sarah, Samuel Dungan & wife Elizabeth, Boaz Walton, Samuel Walton & wife Elizabeth, next John Jackson, Samuel Dungan, Job Walton and Thomas Knight. Jan. 3, 1784 both Joseph & Barbara were still alive and acknowledged their signatures to this deed. This tract, beginning at a corner in the Road from Southampton to Swift's Mill on the Poetquesink Creek & in line of Thomas Knight, formerly Elliss', ran down said Road S33°15'W 15.3 perches & S42°5' 39.2 perches & S21°20'W 29 ½ perches to a stone in the middle of the Road, by said Joseph Walton's other land these seven courses and distances, vizt, N54°25'W 93.7 perches, along ditch N19°W 6 perches, N1°25'W 6 perches, N3°35'E 20.7 perches to a corner stone near end of ditch, N16°10'E 27.1 perches to a stone set for a corner near a spring head, N45°50'E 15.9 perches N39°W 12 perches to a corner in the line of Job Walton, by same N52°10'E 46 perches to a corner of Thomas Knight, by same 38°40'E 118.4 perches to the beginning. This complicated boundary of twelve courses is repeated exactly in the 1776 deed under 49 Boaz Walton. This was the NE end of the tract their father 7 Joseph had rec'd in 1734. 10 May 1779 and 21 Apr. 1780 Joseph of Byberry Twp & wife Barbara deeded to Christopher Search about two acres for 238 pounds and about three acres for 21 pounds, both parts of the remainder of the 161 acres.

No names of children have been found.

LAND in BYBERRY TOWNSHIP:

See notes under his brother Boaz.

DEATH DATES:

Joseph Walton and his wife Barbara were alive on April 21, 1780 when they deeded land to Christopher Search. Swayne says that on January 3, 1784 they acknowledged a deed which they signed November 13, 1764, almost 20 years earlier. Since they acknowledged the 1764 deed on December 12, 1764 (GS26/218), it is not clear why they acknowledged it again in 1784 nor is it clear where the later acknowledgement can be found. Of course, if they really did acknowledge the deed in 1784, they were then alive.
