General Notes: Wife - Effa Patterson

WHY NOT EFFA HINKLE?

Some researchers say that William Downing's wife was Effa Hinkle, a daughter of Jesse Hinkle, 1763. The evidence below indicates otherwise. Thus there was never a person named Effa Hinkle.

On July 6, 1830 Robert Downing wrote a letter to his brother John Downing in Dark County, Ohio. In the second paragraph he mentions a letter which he has just received from their brother Andrew, who speaks of a recent marriage and states that the groom is named Patterson and is a brother of the wife of his (Andrew's) son William. The census indicates that William Downing's wife was named Effa, and from the letter we conclude that she was Effa Patterson. The just mentioned second paragraph follows, and the whole letter can be found in the notes under Sally Downing, the wife of William Hinkle and the youngest sister of John, Robert, and Andrew Downing. Moreover, there is evidence that the middle name of Effa's son Andrew P. Downing was 'Patterson'.

"He informs me in his letter (it was dated June 11th last) that they were all well at that time, and that William Hinkle and family were also well, Sister Sally had been ailing for some time but was got better. He informed me also that Katy was married last December to a young man by the name of Patterson and Brother to his son William's wife. He states that he has had no late account from Carolina or from any of our relations."
