DEATH:
Monroe J. Coots was a freemason. The following page at the website of the Huerfano Co., Colorado Freemasons (http://www.huerfanofreemasons.com/?q=node/496) states that Monroe J. Coots died December 23, 1892. His daughter Ida was buried in 1931 in the Masonic Cemetery in Walsenburg, Huerfano Co. It seems likely that her father is buried there also.
The following obituary is from an internet bulletin board:
Dec. 30, 1892, Walsenburg World. Died, --At 2:30 p. m. on Friday, Dec. 23 Capt. Monroe J. COOTS, at the age of 50 years and three months. Deceased was a native of Texas, but moved to this place twenty-two years ago, where he has been engaged in the stock business. He was a man of his word and much respected in the community. In September 1889, a cancer appeared on his lip, which in spite of medical treatment continued its growth causing great suffering. On Sunday the 18th, he was taken worse and confined to his bed, growing weaker till the end came. The immediate cause of death was blood poisoning proceeding from the cancer. He leaves a wife and seven children, one son in school at St. Joseph, Mo. Four have gone before to the spirit world. Mr. Coots' last act was to dictate and sign his will, after which he expressed his willingness to go. The funeral was held at 2 o'clock on Sunday under the conduct of the Masons of which order he had been for a long time an honored and devoted member. Submitted by Mildred A. J. Coots
General Notes: Wife - Mary E.
Note that the name of her youngest child by her first husband is very similar to the name of her second husband.
