LAND:
On December 31, 1805 William George of Montgomery Co., Kentucky sells to James Rease of Madison Co. a tract of 83 acres, more or less, on the waters of Silver Creek in Madison Co. No price is given, and the metes and bounds description is not very specific. It mentions Peter Kinder, Richard Jacks, Dorothy Green, Greens Branch, and Newton Branch. (F/90)
On October 14, 1826 Samuel Reece and Charity Reece, his wife, and Stephen Hinds and Sally Hinds, his wife, formerly Sally Reece, of the County of Pulaski and State of Kentucky, as two of the heirs at law and legatees of James Reece, deceased, sell to John Richardson of the same place for $130 all of their right, title and claim in a tract of 83 acres by estimation in Madison Co. on the waters of Silver Creek. The tract is described by metes and bounds and adjoins the property of Daniel Green. It is the same tract which was conveyed to James Reece, dec'd, by William George December 1, 1805 and then devised by James Reece to Anna, his wife, during her natural life or widowhood and after the happening of either of those events to be equally divided amongst his children, of whom the said Samuel Reece and Sally Hinds are two. The deed is signed by Samuel Reece, Charity Reece, Stephen Hinds and Sarah Hinds. (R/313)
On December 30, 1828 Shelton G. Richardson and Margaret, his wife, and James H. Reese and Frances, his wife, of Pulaski Co., Kentucky and heirs at law and legatees of James Reese, dec'd, sell to John Richardson of Pulaski Co. for $200 all their right, title and interest in a tract in Madison Co. on the waters of Silver Creek containing by survey 84 acres three roods[sic] and twenty poles. The metes and bounds description is as in R/313, and what is being sold is an undivided 2/7 interest. The deed is signed James H. Reese, Francis Reese and Shelton G. Richardson. (S/248)
On June 6, 1829 William C. Goodloe, a commissioner appointed by a decree of the Circuit Court of Madison Co. at the present term thereof in the case of John Richardson against Washington Reece, etc., sells to John Richardson of Pulaski Co, Kentucky all of the right, title and interest of Washington Reece in the tract of land on which James and Nancy Reece formerly resided on the waters of Silver Creek in Madison Co. and which contains by survey 80 acres three roods and 20 poles. The metes and bounds description is as in S/248, and what is being sold is an undivided 1/7 interest. Washington Reece is the son and heir at law of Washington Reece, dec'd, who was one of the heirs of James and Nancy Reece, dec'd. (T/37)
On August 13, 1829 John Richardson and Elizabeth, his wife, of Pulaski Co. sell to Daniel Green for $515.12 1/2 six sevenths of an undivided tract in Madison Co. on the waters of Silver Creek containing 84 acres 3 roods and 20 poles, being the place whereon Anne Reece lately lived. The metes and bounds description is as before and mentions Daniel Green as the owner of adjoining property. (T/52)
On December 8, 1829 Williamson Guyer and Jane, his wife, of Madison Co. sell to Daniel Green of the same place for $84.87 1/2 a tract in Madison Co. on the waters of Silver Creek containing 84 acres 3 roods and 20 poles, being 1/7 of an undivided tract of land and "being the place whereon Ann Reece lately lived". The metes and bounds description is a before and mentions Daniel Green as the owner of adjoining property. (T/119)
Using the above deeds we can build a list of the 7 children of James and Nancy Ann Reese.
MADISON CO. TAX LISTS:
James Reese appears 3 times beginning in 1805. He is not present 1800-1804. In 1807 the entries of James and Samuel Reese are contiguous and in 1806 very close. Samuel is either James's son or his brother. I suspect that the land on Tate's Creek is the same as the land on Silver Creek. Maybe the two creeks are close together or maybe it is a mistake. The columns are 1) whites over 21, 2) whites over 16 and under 21, 3) blacks over 16, 4) total blacks, 5) horses, etc., 6) value of land per acre, 7) total value, 8) regiment, 9) company. There are 3 regiments in the county (7, 19, & 35; presumably of the militia)

On page 401 appears an inventory of the personal estate of James Reese, dec'd, taken July 23, 1807. There are 66 items including 3 horses, 9 head of cattle, 35 pigs, 9 geese, farming implements and household furniture and utensils. There is one account for $16 and sundry smaller accounts worth $3.33. The total value appears to be $329.91 (hard to read on microfilm), but when I add the individual values I get about $30 more.
JOHN REESE:
A John Reese/Reece/Rees/Rece appears in the Madison Co. tax lists for the first time in 1818 and remains until 1837. From 1818 until 1823 he is in the same regiment as Anna/Nancy Reese but never in the same company. Their entries are never contiguous but in 1821 they are very close. It is tempting to say that he is a son of Anna/Nancy Reese and that he became 21 about 1818 and thus was born about 1797. From 1819 onward he is the owner of a tract of 184 acres either on Silver Creek or Station Camp Creek. A 1826 deed describes his purchase of that tract and says that it is on the waters of both creeks. In that deed he is "John Rees, Sen'r". William Croutcher is mentioned in the metes and bounds description as an owner of adjoining property. In the 1820 census John Reece, over 45 years of age, is 2 entries away form Wm. Croucher. Thus the John Reese in the tax lists appears to be too old to be a son of James and Nancy Ann Reese. In 1826 and in 1827 the owner of the 184 acres is "John Rees, Sr.", and a "John Rees, Jr." is also in the tax list. The property was sold in 1840 and the seller was "John Rees, Jr. and Nancy, his wife". It is probably the case that John, Jr. is the son of John, Sr. and that the son inherited the property about 1830 when the father died. Tax lists, unlike the census, do not specify age. The owner of the 184 acre tract over a period of almost 20 years is probably 2 different persons -- first the father and then the son.
In any event John Reese is not a son of James and Nancy Ann Reese. John Reese, Sr. might be a brother of James Reese, or they may be unrelated.
Further evidence that John Reese is not a son of James and Nancy/Anna is that the above cited deeds indicate that there were 7 heirs and we have a list of all seven. John is not among them.
General Notes: Wife - Nancy Ann
DEATH DATE:
Nancy Ann appears in the Madison Co. tax lists for the last time in 1823. She is not mentioned in the October 14, 1826 deed in which two heirs of James Reese sell their interest in their inherited property to the husband of a third heir.
