The 1830 census for John Downing, Alexander's grandfather, suggests that Alexander (male 5<10) is older than Catharine (female <5). This ordering is consistent with the 1840 census for Ann Downing's second husband Tyrance Emerson. The biographical sketch of William, Alexander's older brother, lists the children of Baltis in the order William, John, Alexander, Catharine, and Baltis. In 1860 Catharine said that she was 35.
