The ages of the wife in 1810 and 1820 suggest that Arthur's first wife may have died and that he may have remarried between 1810 and 1820. Thus Susannah Hitt may or may not be the mother of Mahala.

Arthur was a loyalist and served as a Pvt in the British Army during the Revolutionary War. It is said that he was captured at the battle of Yorktown and imprisioned at Fredericksburg, Vriginia.
One author says that the descendants of Arthur Gladstone changed their name to Gladson. The name Gladson will be used only where it is specifically used by a descendant.

BIRTH YEAR:

The 1830 census indicates that Susannah was born between 1770 and 1780. The marriage date indicates that she was born in 1770 or before. This assumes that Arthur Gladstone had only one wife, which may or may not be the case. If Susannah, Arthur's first wife, died between 1810 and 1820, then the 1810 census indicates that Susannah was born before 1765.

WHO WAS HER FATHER?

Susannah is too old to be a great-granddaughter of the immigrant Peter Hitt. She must be a granddaughter. John and Joseph are the only reasonable candidates to be her father. Susannah married about the time that Joseph and his sons left for South Carolina. The fact that she and her husband did not go with them suggests, but certainly does not prove, that John is her father. Another indication that Susannah is a daughter of John is that two of their daughters (Mahala and Anzelana) married grandsons of John.
