PENSION:
On November 29, 1864 Mariah J. Hinds, age 22 and a resident of Pulaski Co., applied for a widow's pension. She is the widow of James Hinds, who was a corporal in Company I, 49th Kentucky Infantry and who died in Lincoln Co., Kentucky December 12, 1863 of typhoid fever. They were married December 12, 1859 by Wm. B. Gragg, a preacher, and her name before marriage was Mariah J. Gregory. She and her husband had two children, Mary L. Hinds, aged 3 years, and Wm. H. Hinds, aged 2 years next January.
On May 10, 1867 Samuel Hinds, resident of Pulaski Co. and guardian of the minor children of James Hinds, deceased, in order to obtain the benefits of the provision made by the act of Congress approved July 14, 1862, granting pensions to minor children under sixteen years of age of deceased officers and soldiers, states that he is the guardian of Mary L. Hinds, born October 18, 18__, and James H. Hinds, born January 7, 1862, whose father was a private in Company I commanded by Captain I. L. Hardgrove in the 49th Regiment of Kentucky Infantry Volunteers and that the said James Hinds died in Lincoln Co., Kentucky December 12, 1863 by reason of typhoid fever. He had only two surviving children. His widow, formerly Mariah J. Gregory, married William Edwards in 1866, with whom she is now living.
In another document he says that Mary L. was born October 18, 1860, that Wm. H. was born January 7, 1863, that the widow remarried Wm. Edwards April 12, 1866, and that the parents of the two children were married in Pulaski Co. December 12, 1859 by W. B. Gragg. Jno. R. Richardson makes a statement about the children and the remarriage.
Samuel Hinds was appointed guardian of the two minor children September 17, 1866.
Another document says that Mary L. was born October 18, 1860 and will be sixteen October 17, 1876 and that William H. was born January 7, 1863 and will be sixteen January 6, 1879. A pension certificate was issued for $8/month commencing April 13, 1866 and ending January 6, 1879. Two additional dollars per month were awarded to each of the children commencing July 25, 1866 and payable to Samuel Hinds, guardian.
The widow had already remarried when Samuel Hinds applied for a pension for the minor children. It appears that her purely widow's pension was terminated March 4, 1866 before her second marriage on April 12 and then later reinstated because of the minor children.
On July 11, 1871 John E. Cossen was appointed guardian of the two minor children to replace Samuel Hinds.
