The census taker was confused. This entry should be 'Bartholomew'. He is probably the owner of 2 slaves. They are listed under Thomas Grinstead in the Slave Schedule. There is another census entry for the real Thomas Grinstead in Warren Co. in 1860.

WGFA:

The William Grinstead Family in America (Gorrell Shumaker and John L. N. Grinstead, April 1974):

pg 116: "Bartholomew Thomas Grinstead (1796 - abt 1877) [son of Richard Grinstead I] married 9/4/1820 Nancy Totty (1806 - ?). Bartholomew b. in Virginia; married in Warren County, Kentucky. Nancy was dau of Wm. Totty. Apparently there were three children: William Warren, Mary and Ed (or Ned)."
pg 30: "Richard Grinstead I's son, Thomas Bartholomew Grinstead, who lived and died at this same location, gave the land for the Grinstead Cemetery, and there many of the Grinstead descendants have been buried. William Warren Grinstead, a son of Bartholomew, lived on at this same location as did his daughter (maiden), Lucinda Margaret. She died 2-6-1941, having been attended in her last years by a nephew and his wife, Roy Elrod, a son of Lucinda's younger sister, Rebecca."

BARTHOLOMEW'S FATHER:

Everyone says that his father was Richard but they provide no evidence. I think that the preponderance of the evidence suggests that his father was David.

David's wife was Nancy Ann Warren. They were married in Louisa Co., Virginia in 1793. Richard's second wife was Elizabeth Warren. They were married about 1787 probably in Louisa Co. It is very likely that Nancy Ann and Elizabeth were related. An 1813 Louisa Co., Virginia deed makes it clear that Nancy Ann's father was Bartholomew Warren and that Elizabeth was not her sister (see notes under Bartholomew Warren). 'Bartholomew' is not a common name and there is no evidence that it was previously used among the Grinsteads. It seems very likely that Bartholomew Grinstead was named for Bartholomew Warren. He was named for his mother's father and his mother was Nancy Ann Warren, not Elizabeth Warren. I don't know the name of Elizabeth's father.

In 1830 Bartholomew is living next to David's son Thomas Grinstead. He is also living next to Richard's son Richard, so whoever his father is, he is living next to a brother and to a first cousin. In 1850 Bartholomew is still living relatively close to Thomas but Richard has moved on to Indiana and then to Iowa. Thomas named one of his sons Bartholomew W. If it far more likely that someone would name a son for a brother than for a cousin.

Bartholomew's name is often seen as 'Bartholomew Thomas' and sometimes as 'Thomas Bartholomew'. The reason is that his 1860 census entry is in the name of 'Thos. Grinstead'. I think that the census taker knew both Thomas and Bartholomew and just carelessly wrote 'Thos.' instead of 'Bartholomew', but it may be that Bartholomew had two names and sometimes used one and sometimes the other. Do we ever see 'Bartholomew T.' or 'B. T.' or 'Thomas B.' or 'T. B.' in the public record? If we do, then Thomas and Bartholomew probably aren't brothers and David is not Bartholomew's father. I have never seen any of those combinations, but I have not seen every document.

In the 1800 Louisa Co. census for Richard, there is a male <10 slot that Bartholomew can occupy, but in 1810 there is no male 10-15 slot available for him. We have no 1810 census for David, and in 1820 Bartholomew has his own entry.
