MILITARY SERVICE and BIRTH YEAR:
In a roster of Capt. William Edmonds' company of Virginia troops in the French and Indian War dated September 25, 1761 the following are present: Herman Hitt; Jno. Hitt, Jnr; Jno. Hitt, son of Jos.; John Hitt; and Joseph Hitt. Capt. Edmonds lived in Fauquier Co., and it is believed that most of the men in his company were from that county. ("Virginia Magazine of History and Biography", Vol 7, pgs 305-6)
It is probable that all of them were at least 18 years of age in 1761.
PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX LIST:
1782 is the first year that a list of men required to pay a tax on personal property is available for Fauquier Co., Virginia. John Hitt is in the list from 1782 through 1804. His widow Sarah is in the list until 1811. The columns are 1) white males >21 (1783-1787) or white male tithables >16 (1788--), 2) white males 16-21, 3) Negroes (1782) or Negroes >16 (1783--), 4) Negroes <16 (1783-1787) or Negroes <16 and >12 (1788--, 5) horses/mares/colts/mules, 6) cattle, 7) amount of tax, 8) names of tithables >16 in the household other than the person chargeable with the tax. "1TN" means the district of commissioner Travers Nash, arbitrarily assigned the number '1'. "2CP" is the district of commissioner Charles Pickett, arbitrarily assigned the number '2'. Commissioners come and go; the districts are stable.

LAND in FAUQUIER CO.:
"Virginia Northern Neck Land Grants" (Gertrude E. Gray, 1987), Vol 2, pg 95:
John Hitt of Fauquier Co.; 53 acres in said Co., Surv. Mr. John Moffett; adj. Mr. Lee & Mr. Hitt, Mr. Screen, by Turkey Run. 13 Nov 1762 -- Land Grant Book I, pg 91
In the 1770 rent roll for Fauquier Co. John Hitt, Jr. is the owner of 53 acres. The Fauquier Co. Land Tax Lists are available from 1783 onward. In that year John Hitt with 50 acres, Mary Hitt with 141 acres and Elias Hitt with 25 acres are contiguous entries. 50 + 141 + 25 = 216 and it is likely that John and the others inherited their land from his father John Hitt, who died in 1782 and who in the 1770 rent roll was the owner of 216 acres. John, Mary and Elias continue to be contiguous entries with the indicated amounts of land until 1787. In 1788 Mary and Elias have vanished and John with 144 acres and Peter with 72 acres are contiguous. 144 + 72 = 216. John continues to be the owner of record of the 144 acre tract until 1810 and Peter in in the list as the owner of 72 acres until 1800. From 1793 until 1806 John is the owner of another 37.25 acre tract.
The Land Tax Lists suggest that in 1811 John's land was distributed among his heirs as follows:
Nathan 19.75 acres "of Hitt's Repres'ts"
Elijah 79 acres "of Hitt's Repres'ts"
John 19.75 acres "of Hitt's Executors"
Martin 19.75 acres "of Hitt's Executors"
Steven 79 acres "Of Hitt's Executors"
It is not obvious why Martin Hitt is included in the distribution since he is not one of John's sons. In 1810 William sold his interest in his father's land to Elijah (17/799) and Jesse sold his interest to Stephen (17/801). In 1811 Elijah bought the interest of his sister Sarah (18/210). Each of those 3 deeds states explicitly that John Hitt who died in 1805 owned 217 acres although the Land Tax Lists indicate that he owned 144 acres. Note that 79 = 19.75 * 4. It might be that Steven and Elijah each bought 3 shares from their siblings in order to have 4 shares in all. 19.75 * 11 = 217.25, and 10 children plus Martin make 11.
John Hitt who died in 1782 owned 216 acres which came into the possession of his son John (144 acres) and another son Peter on the River (72 acres). Peter died in 1802 and there is no record of what happened to his 72 acres. Maybe John acquired it but did not report his acquistion to the taxing authorities. Note that the amount of land distributed to John's heirs was 217.25 acres.
Martin Hitt did not receive any of his father's land. Perhaps it was felt that he had been treated unfairly and for that reason he was included in the above distribution of his brother's land.
On December 24, 1785 John Hitt and Sarah, his wife, of Fauquier Co. sold to James Hopwood of the same place for £68 a tract of 50 acres on which Hopwood then lived. It is described by metes and bounds and is close to Turkey Run. (Fauquier Co. Deed Records 9/134) This tract might be the same as the 53 acres he owned in 1770.
On March 13, 1791 William Russell and Mary, his wife, of Fauquier Co. sold to John Hitt of the same place for £22 7s a tract of 37 1/4 acres in Fauquier Co. on the north side of the road from Fauquier Courthouse to Dumfries and on the west side of the Mill Road, a part of the tract where William Russell then lived. On page 101 of Fauquier Co. Will Book 4 is an inventory and appraisement of the personal estate of John Hitt, dec'd. It was returned and ordered to be recorded May 27, 1805. The total value is $850.17. The most valuable item is a Negro woman and child, $300. On pages 103-06 is a report of the sale, also recorded May 27, 1805. The widow bought the most, and it appears that each child except Stephen bought something: Sarah Hitt, $144.595; James Hitt, $9.18; Elijah Hitt, $33.96; Nathan Hitt, $17.23; Jesse Hitt, $60.71; William Hitt, $28.16; John Hitt, $.75; Elisha Curtis, $4.915; Elizabeth Hitt, $4.21; Susannah Hitt, $1.00. Martin Hitt bought items worth $12.62 and there were 6 other buyers ($117.07). The Negro woman and child are not included in the sales report.
