CHILDREN:
The names and birthdates of John Grinstead's 6 children appear in "Northumberland County, Record of Births, 1661 -- 1810" (Virginia Colonial Abstracts, Vol 1, Beverley Fleet, reprinted in 3 volumes in 1988, originally published in 34 volumes from 1937 to 1949). These birth records are from St. Stephen's Parish although the earliest records predate the existence of that parish. All records in the 90 year period until about 1750 are in the same hand, the hand of an "educated gentleman" according to Beverley Fleet. They are a copy of earlier records now lost. Beverley Fleet says, "There are many apparent errors in the original."
A case in point is the sequence
Thomas Grinstead, 29 Dec 1679
Jean Grinstead, 28 May 1680
John Grinstead, 20 Jan 1681
All are said to be the children of John Grinstead. There is only one John Grinstead that we know of in Northumberland Co. in 1680. Even without Jean a birth 13 months after a previous birth is unusual.
