CIVIL WAR:
"The Roster of Union Soldiers 1861--1865 Kentucky, Tennessee":
John P. Grinsted 9th Inf. Co. E, H Capt.
According to "Official Army Register of the Volunteer Force of the United States Army 1861--1865", Volume IV, the Ninth Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp Boyle, Adair County, Kentucky November 26, 1861 to serve three years. It was mustered out December 15, 1864 by reason of expiration of term of service.
On page 585 of "War of the Rebellion Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies", Series I, Volume 20, Part 1 there is a report dated January 1, 1863 concerning an engagement on Stone's River near Murfreesborough, Tennessee. All the officers were commended including Second Lt. John P. Grinstead. On page 591 in a report of another engagement near Murfreesborough Lt. Grinstead is again commended.

Vol 1, pg 795 -- Roll of Company E, 9th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry:
John P. Grinstead, 1st lieutenant, enrolled March 6, 1863, mustered in March 6, 1863 at Murfreesboro, Tn for 3 years; promoted from sergeant to 2d lieutenant September 30, 1862, to 1st lieutenant March 6, 1863, to captain Company H September 15, 1864.
Vol 1, pg 800 -- Roll of Company H, 9th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry:
John P. Grinstead, captain, enrolled September 15, 1864, mustered in September 15, 1864 at Gaylesville, Alabama for 3 years, mustered out December 15, 1864 at Louisville, Ky; transferred from Co. E as 1st lieutenant November 2, 1863, promoted captain September 15, 1864.
