He is not in the Slave Schedule. Almost certainly 'Grinson' should be 'Grinstead'. 'Grinson' is essentially a non-existent surname. In 1840, 1850, 1860, and 1870 there are no other Grinsons in Virginia. In 1850 there is only 1 other Grinson in the US.

I have a copy of a document created about 1920 showing the descendents of John Grinstead and Mary Walton which says that Orr married Margaret Hutton. A Washington Co. marriage record says that Margaret Hutton married William I. Gallihen [should be Galliher] October 4, 1848. There are lots of Huttons in Washington Co. It is not unreasonable that there might have been two Margaret Huttons. It would be desirable to find William Galliher and wife Margaret in a subsequent census, but I have been unable to do that. In any event the widow Margaret Grinstead is in the Washington Co. census from 1860 to 1880, and she lives close to Huttons. In 1860 she is living next to Pleasant McCormack and his wife Mary Grinstead. She is buried in the Old Glade Spring Cemetery as Mrs. Margaret Grinstead 15 Oct 1806 -- 20 Sep 1890 ("High on a Windy Hill, Cemeteries of Washington Co., Va.", 1968, page 180). -- Neal Parker, Mar 2006.

HIS NAME:

Although it appears that Orr Grinstead died fairly young with no children, his name did not disappear. His sister Mary has a son Orr McCormack, his brother Benjamin Franklin has a son Thomas Orr Grinstead, and his brother Mathew D. has a son Edward Orr Grinstead. The latter has a grandson with the same name.

In the 1850 census she is with her husband, who appears in the census as Orr Grinson. Presumably he dies before 1860.

She is not in the Slave Schedule. Her brother-in-law Pleasant McCormack lives at 652/637. Her maiden name is Hutton, and three Hutton households live at 654/639, 658/642, and 659/643. One of those (Arthur (60, Va, $40000/$15000)) appears to be quite well-to-do.
