Northumberland County Orders (Virginia Colonial Abstracts, Series 2, Volume 1, Northumberland County, Virginia 1678 -- 1713; Lindsay O. Duvall, 1979):

Page 256, Book 4, Court 18 Mar 1684/85:

"Thomas Grinstead, aged 7, and John Grinstead, aged 4, with consent of William Grinstead their father, to serve William Taylor until 20."

Page 323, Book 5, Court 22 Feb 1704/5:

"Thomas Grinsteed orphan of Wm. Grinsteed chose his brother William Grinsteed guardian."

Comment: In 1705 Thomas Grinsteed is about 27; it is not obvious why he needs a guardian. It may be that he is mentally incapacitated in some way.

Thomas has a first cousin born in 1679. The items mentioned under that cousin may in fact apply to this Thomas.
