CIVIL WAR:

"The Roster of Union Soldiers 1861--1865 Kentucky, Tennessee":

Thomas R. Grinstead 8th Cav. Co. M Cpl.
Thomas R. Grinstead 1st Cav. Co. E, C

His brother Elihu is also a corporal in Company M of the 8th Cavalry. Another brother Parker S. is in the 1st Cavalry.

According to "Official Army Register of the Volunteer Force of the United States Army 1861--1865", Volume IV, the Eighth Cavalry Regiment was organized at Russellville, Kentucky in September 1862 to serve one year. It was mustered out September 23, 1863 by reason of expiration of term of service.

The First Cavalry Regiment was organized at Liberty, Burkesville and Monticello, Kentucky in October 1861 to serve three years. The original members (except veterans) were mustered out December 31, 1864 by reason of expiration of term of service, and the veterans and recruits consolidated into a battalion of three companies and retained in service until September 20, 1865, when it was mustered out in accordance with orders from the War Department.

Thomas R. Grinstead, private, enrolled January 5, 1862, mustered in February 28, 1862 at Bardstown, Ky for 3 years; prisoner of war, captured at Philadelphia, Tennessee, October 20, 1863.

In the report of the Adjutant General he is not in Company M of the 8th Cavalry.
