This census entry indicates that a woman named Matilda married a man with surname Hale in about 1871.

FIRST MARRIAGE:

I cannot find a marriage record in Kentucky for her first marriage. According to the record of her second marriage she was born in Laurel Co. In the 1850 census for Laurel Co. there are several Matildas born about 1847 who might have married a man named Hale in about 1871 and who was a widow in 1880. Matilda Westerfield satisfies all the requirements and is the best choice. Note that two of her children have the same names as her mother and father.

In the 1870 census Matilda is in the census twice in Laurel Co., Kentucky. In one entry she is 22 and is living with her parents. In another entry she is 23 and is living with William Elliott (30), probably a relative of Matilda's mother. Both entries are in McHargue Precinct, and the post office is Lynn Camp. Wm. Hale (27, Tn, $1000/$2310), his wife, and one child live in the same precinct and have the same post office. John Hale (29, Tn, $---/$300) is unmarried and is living with William. John is probably William's brother, and he is probably the first husband of Matilda Westerfield. I cannot find him in the 1880 census.
