TAX ROLL:

Socrates Hinds is on the Wayne Co., Kentucky tax roll for the first time in 1837. In that year and until 1842 he has no net value. In 1845 he has 1 horse/mule worth $30. In 1854 he has 4 cattle worth $20. Generally he has very little. From 1855 to 1857 he owns a town lot. In 1858 he owns 1 horse/mule worth $100 and 1 hog. In 1869 he owns 1 horse/mule worth $75, 1 cattle and 1 hog. In 1870 and 1871 he is not on the tax roll and in the 1870 census he is in Caldwell Co., Missouri. However, he is again on the Wayne Co. tax roll from 1872 to 1874. Does that mean he went to Missouri and then returned? I don't know. He died in Missouri. From 1872 to 1874 he owns land for the first time -- 75 acres on Meadow Creek worth about $1000.

COMMENTARY ON THE MORRIS CEMETERY, CALDWELL COUNTY
Narrators: Mrs. Minnie Morris and Robert Morris

The Morris family graveyard was on Kerr land; it was primarily meant for the Kerrs but also includes families connected by marriage with the Kerrs and some of their neighbors who were not near their own burying ground.

. . .

Jerry Sloan (1833-1885) has a reason for being there. His mother was a Morris and his wife was a daughter of Socrates Hinds who [is] buried there.
There is quite a list of the Hinds connection there. These people were just good neighbors of the Morris-Kerr group. While the Hinds have descendants in the county, the name itself is gone. Socrates Hinds 1811-1880 lies there and wife Jane 1813-1877. (The neighbors speak of him as Tes Hinds.) Mrs. Emila A. Wray was their daughter, and her two children lie there. The five Smith children all dying under two years who lie there are the children of still another Hinds daughter.

WHO WAS HIS FATHER?

Socrates lived for many years in Wayne Co. Although there is no direct evidence as to who his father was, it seems highly likely that he is related to the other Hinds in the county. Of the men named Hinds who lived in Wayne Co. and who are old enough to be his father, most can be eliminated. For example, some researchers assign Socrates to the Joseph Hinds who died in 1820, but there is substantial evidence that Joseph had 10 children, and we have a reliable list of those 10. Socrates is not among them. Another example is Archibald Hinds, Joseph's son, who was born in 1795 but did not marry until 1826.

I think that Samuel Hinds, Sr., who died about 1825, is the most likely candidate to be Socrates's father. Socrates would be the youngest child of Samuel and his first wife Sarah. Samuel remarried in 1820 and had another child by his second wife. Sarah's oldest child was born about 1791. Since Socrates was born in 1816, she had children over a period of 25 years. That is possible. In the 1820 census Samuel has a male child less than 10. Socrates is 4. There is no other candidate for that slot. In 1846 Abigail Gray (Samuel's youngest child; by his second wife) and her husband Matthew W. Gray of Johnson Co., Illinois appointed Socrates Hinds of Wayne Co. to sell their interest in property inherited from Samuel (K/152). That appointment suggests a close relationship between Abigail and Socrates. Note also that Socrates named his youngest child Abigail.

The principal weakness in the argument that Socrates is a son of Samuel Hinds, Sr. is that in 1830 (E/239) and in 1840 (H/301) he is not listed among the heirs of Samuel who are selling their inherited property. His absence in 1830 can be explained by the fact that he was a minor, but in 1840 he was 24 years old and in Wayne Co. and available to participate. Maybe he had already sold his interest to a sibling in a deed that was never recorded.

JAMES?

Some researchers refer to Socrates Hinds as James Socrates Hinds. In the 19th-century documents that I have seen he is referred to simply as Socrates.
