RLH:

The following is from an article by Robert L. Hess in the HENCKEL GENEALOGICAL BULLETIN (Vol 33, No 2, Fall 2002) entitled "Jacob Hinkle of Spread Eagle Tavern". Numbers in brackets indicate notes which follow.

5. Benjamin Hinckel was born 12 March 1770, probably in Cocalico Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, the son of Jacob Hinckel and wife Christina. His baptism on 28 June 1770 appears in the church records of Trinity Lutheran Church at Reading, Pennsylvania, with sponsor Christina Hinckel, mother, "the father is absent".[11] Benjamin does not appear as an adult in the census records of North or South Carolina near his brothers. Nothing more is known of Benjamin.

11. Rev. J. W. Early, "Trinity Lutheran Church of Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania" (Schuylkill Roots), 54. Editor's note: although this baptism is recorded in the records of Trinity Lutheran Church of Reading, this does not prove that Benjamin was baptized in Reading. Ministers in his era traveled extensively and recorded their acts in the record books of their home churches. It would not have been unusual for Christina to stay behind with family to have her child before joining her husband in his move to Frederick County, Maryland, then a frontier.
