TAX ROLLS:
George Hinds appears on the Wayne Co. tax roll for the first time in 1808. He is a white male over 21 and has no property. In 1809 he owns a horse. If he became 21 in 1808, he was born about 1787. The tax roll lists him as a landowner for the first time in 1815 and says that he owns 75 acres on Fall Creek which was entered, surveyed, and patented by Joseph Hinds. In subsequent years the number of acres in invariably 64. His father, Joseph Hinds, died about 1815, and these 64 acres are part of a tract of 100 acres which was patented to him 11 April 1811. George seems to be sole owner of these 64 acres and shares ownership with his siblings of the remaining 36 acres. There is no will, and it isn't clear why George inherited more than the others. In August 1815 all the siblings sold their joint interest in the 36 acres. See the notes for Joseph Hinds, the father, for the details of that transaction, which provides a valuable list of his children.
George never owned any slaves and generally owned one horse. Sometimes he had two. On November 26, 1834 he and his wife Mary sold their 64 acres on Fall Creek to John Bond for $200. It is described in the deed as "being a part of Joseph Hines 100 acre tract which was entered, surveyed, and patented in the name of said Joseph Hinds lying on Fall Creek". (Bk F, pgs 378-79) George is on the tax roll in 1833 but not subsequently. For purposes of taxation his land had had a value of between $4 and $6 per acre.
George Hinds is on the tax roll of Breckinridge Co., Kentucky for the first time in 1837. He owns 150 acres on Rough Creek worth $150 and 2 horses worth $150. There are 2 white males over 21 in his household. (There are no Hinds in Breckinridge Co. in 1834 or in 1835, and 1836 is missing.) The following year there is only one white male over 21 in the household. In 1849 he owns the same land and 3 horses worth $100. In 1850 his widow Mrs Mary Hinds is on the tax roll with the same land.
CHILDREN:
From the census and from Breckinridge Co. marriage records we can deduce that George and Mary Hinds had the following children: Joseph, Benjamin, Hannah, James, Squire, John, Margaret, and H. R. A deed signed May 24, 1871 (Breckinridge Co. Deed Book 28, page 381) provides further information. As the consequence of a lawsuit, the Breckinridge Circuit Count issued an order during the 1870 April term that a tract of land on the North Fork of Rough Creek containing about 149 acres which had been the property of George and Mary Hinds, then deceased, be sold at public auction. It was purchased July 18, 1870 by Hamilton R. Hinds for $118.75. For some reason this didn't work out, and in the deed of May 24, 1871, the heirs of George and Mary Hinds, including Hamilton R., transfer the property to Benjamin Hinds, who agrees to pay to the other heirs the full value of the previously mentioned purchase price. The sellers, all of whom are said to be heirs of George and Mary Hinds, deceased, are
---Hannah Basham, formerly Hinds
---Hamilton R. Hinds
---Squire Hinds
---Margaret Simpson, formerly Hinds, and John Simpson, her husband, and George W. and Isaac S. Bond, children of said Margaret
---Jane Turpin, formerly Hinds and Vincent, her husband, Polly A. Turpin and Richard, her husband, George W. Hinds and Ellen Hinds, heirs of John Hinds, deceased
---Squire Aldridge, Lewis C. Aldridge, James Aldridge, Mary J. Aldridge, Mary E. Aldridge and Ruth Aldridge, heirs of Charity Aldridge, formerly Hinds
Thus there is 1 further child: Charity Hinds, who was married to John Aldridge. By 1871 Charity, and probably also her husband, are dead. Margaret's first husband John Washington Bond has presumably died, and she has remarried. John Hinds has died, and since James and Joseph are not mentioned, one presumes that they died without issue.
The list of heirs in the deed could be interpreted to mean that Jane Turpin and Polly A. Turpin are children of George and Mary Hinds or that they are children of John Hinds. Census data supports the latter interpretation.

The parenthesized numbers represent real ages to be compared with the age categories that appear in the census. Francis Marion Hitt is probably a son of Samuel Hitt rather than a son of George Hitt, but he can be fitted into the census entries for George.
General Notes: Wife - Mary Hinkle
Mary Hinkle married George Hinds in Wayne Co., Kentucky in 1811. Charity Hinkle married Martin Turpin in Wayne Co. in 1812. In 1850 in Breckinridge Co., Kentucky Charity and her husband Martin are living very close to Hamilton R. Hinds, a son of George and Mary. It seems probable that Charity and Mary are sisters.
