CHILDREN:

On page 243 of Wayne Co., Ky Marriages & Vital Records 1801-1860 by Bork we find the following appointment:

Wards: Joseph M., Elizabeth Ann, Polly Mariah Johnson, infants of Pleasant Johnson, dec'd. Guardian, Archibald Hinds; Ct. of Appt., Aug 1831; Penalty $1500; Securities N. M. Mercer & Walter Emerson.

The following was sent to me by Karen Raichle May 11, 2007:

Pleasant S Johnson's father, James Johnson Sr, died in Washington Co., Mo in 1833. His will also verifies the three children of Pleasant Johnson and Polly Hinds.

". . .one part to wit one third unto the lawful heirs of Pleasant Smith Johnson dec'd to wit Joseph Miller Johnson, Betsy Ann Johnson, and Polly Mariah Johnson."

LAND:

The following tracts are in Wayne Co., Kentucky:

On February 11, 1823 George Cox and Nancy, his wife, sold to Pleasant S. Johnson for $450 a tract of 200 acres on the south side of Cumberland River which was part of a 400 acre tract patented to Nancy Martin. (Bk C, pgs 411-412, Wayne Co., Ky) Cox had obtained this tract on June 15, 1818 as a result of the failure of Ann Martin, who died intestate, to comply with the conditions of a bond which she and John Martin had executed to Cox. (Bk C, pgs 56-67), and on May 12, 1821 he mortgaged it for $200. Its appraised value was $300. (Bk C, 194-95) Pleasant S. Johnson's 200 acre tract came into the possession of John S. Wray (and Rhoda Payne) as follows:

13 Jan 1841 (H/413) *Joseph M. Johnson --> John S. Wray
8 Jan 1851 (L/170) *John S. Wray --> Rhoda Payne
26 Jun 1852 (L/540) Z. B. Ford & Mary Mariah Ford --> John S. Wray
29 Nov 1853 (M/172) Henry Gibson & Elizabeth A. Gibson --> John S. Wray

Joseph M. Johnson, Elizabeth Ann Johnson (married to Henry Gibson), and Mary Mariah Johnson (married to Zachariah B. Ford) each possessed a one-third interest after the death of their parents. On June 26, 1852 Z. B. Ford and his wife said that they possessed a two thirds interest having purchased the interest of her sister. I don't find the corresponding deed. What John S. Wray bought from Elizabeth Ann Johnson and her husband on November 29, 1853 was her interest in a specific 100 acre subtract of the 200 acre tract, and he sold 66 2/3 acres to Rhoda Payne at a time when he only had a one third interest in the whole tract. What a mess.

Also on February 11, 1823 Pleasant S. Johnson purchased for $30 from his brother-in-law Levi S. Hinds a "one undivided 14th part containing 206 acres being part of landed estate of Joseph Hinds, dec'd, to which Levi is entitled as one of the heirs" (Bk C, pgs 410-11).

DEATH:

Pleasant S. Johnson was killed in Whitley Co., Kentucky in the winter of 1825/26. Three people were convicted of manslaughter. See the following website for an interesting account of what is known about this event:
