DENT CO., MISSOURI:

On January 1, 1853 a "Balty D. Hinkle" is a witness to the signing of a deed in Wayne Co., Tennessee (Deed Book H, pg 39). Sometime after that, he moved to Dent Co., Missouri, where he married Martha Parker May 12, 1856. Their first child was born in May 1858, and Martha died June 10, presumably as a consequence of the birth. He remarried July 17, 1859. His second wife was Mariah Jane McEntire. She was 17, and he was 31. In the 1860 census he is still in Dent Co. with his second wife, his son, and her younger brother John McEntire. He was a Justice of the Peace in Dent Co. and performed several marriages in 1859.

The Dent Co. courthouse burned May 3, 1866, and the deed records were destroyed. Some deeds were refiled for record after the fire. On March 25, 1854 Baltis D. Hinkle of Dent Co. sold lot 4, block 15 in the Town of Salem (SA/30), and on November 9, 1859 B. D. Hinkle and Mariah J., his wife, of Dent Co. sold lots 1 and 4, block 22 in the Town of Salem (SA/140). On August 27, 1855 B. D. Hinkle sold to E. A. Hight et al, trustees of the Salem United Baptist Church for $15 lot 3, block 23 (A/524). Between May 1857 and December 1860 Baltis D. Hinkle signed 7 commissioner's deeds in his capacity as "special commissioner appointed by the County Court of Dent Co." (A/365, A/526, A/617, A/618; two more in book A 1/2). SA and A designate the same book. "SA" probably means "Substitute A". See

for a detailed description of how land use has evolved at various locations in downtown Salem. The Salem United Baptist Church was in fact built about 1874 on block 25.

ARRIVAL IN ARKANSAS:

B. D. Hinkle is on the tax roll for Izard Co. in 1866 but not in 1865. Rolls exist for 1861, 65, and 66 in the period 1861-66. His son Christopher was born in Arkansas in about 1865. This suggests that he left Missouri and came to Arkansas about 1865.

CIVIL WAR:

In "The Roster of Confederate Soldiers 1861-1865" edited by Janet B. Hewitt (1996) there are 2 entries for Baltis D. Hinkle:

Ballis D. Hinkle AR 1st Vol. Co.F Cpl.
Baltis D. Hinkle MO Cav. Freeman's Regt. Co.F 1st Sgt.

In "Compendium of the Confederate Armies -- Florida and Arkansas" by Stewart Sifakis (1992) we find on page 70:

Arkansas 1st Infantry Regiment Volunteers (Militia)
Organization: Mustered into Confederate service by companies for 30 days between November 15 and 19, 1861. Mustered out by companies between Dec 15 and 19, 1861.

For more information see http://www.couchgenweb.com/civilwar/1volcof.html.

In "Compendium of the Confederate Armies -- Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri" (2003) we find on page 105:

Missouri Freeman's Cavalry Regiment
First Commander: Thomas R. Freeman (Colonel)
Organization: Organized on Jan 26, 1864. Surrendered by Brigadier General M. Jeff Thompson as part of the Army of the Northern Sub-district of Arkansas, District of Arkansas and West Louisiana, Trans-Mississippi Dept. on May 11, 1865.
4 assignments.
1 battle -- Price's Missouri Raid (Aug-Oct 1864)

The fact that his first service was in Arkansas and his second in Missouri suggests that his move from Missouri to Arkansas may have taken place over a period of several years during which period he was sometimes in one state and sometimes in the other.

MOVE TO TEXAS:

In the 1880 census Baltis D. Hinkle, 52, farmer, is in Ellis Co., Texas. On September 7, 1875, he purchased from George Butcher 80 acres out of the Samuel Clark 320 acre survey on the line between Dallas and Ellis Counties about 12 miles north of Waxahachie and also another tract of about 20 acres in Ellis Co. on Red Oak Creek about 10 miles north of Waxahachie in the S. McCommas 320 acre survey (bk O, pg 212). The Clark and McCommas surveys are contiguous. Prior to living in Ellis Co. Baltis D. was living in Dallas Co. although he never owned any land there. He is on the tax roll of Dallas Co. for the first time in 1871. He owns 1 horse worth $40, 2 mules worth $150, and $15 of miscellaneous property. He is on the tax roll there the following year but not in 1873. He is on the Ellis Co. tax roll for the first time in 1874 and is paying taxes on the land be purchased in 1875. Why did he leave Izard Co., Arkansas and move to Ellis Co.? The answer probably involves his older brother William Hinkle. William was born in Alabama April 4, 1821, and in 1850 was living in Clark Co., Ark., a significant distance away from Izard Co. His was the only Hinkle household there in 1850 and in 1860. He is on the tax roll in Dallas Co. for the first time in 1870 and owns 230 acres very close to the Ellis Co. line about 3 miles west and 3 miles south of the town of Lancaster. That land is in the W. P. Holman and James A. Joy surveys. He purchased it January 18, 1870 (M/245). The 2 tracts that Baltis D. purchased in 1875 in Ellis Co. are in the Samuel Clark and S. McCommas surveys, which adjoin the south side of J. A. Joy. The seller was the father-in-law of his nephew Jesse Baltis Hinkle. On May 24, 1889 B. D. Hinkle and his wife, M. J. Hinkle, sold the two tracts that they had bought in 1875 (54/413, 76/507), and on July 8, 1889 they purchased land in Wichita Co., Texas.

WICHITA CO., TEXAS

On July 8, 1889 B. D. Hinkle and his son-in-law J. B. Baker each bought a quarter section in Wichita Co. about 7 miles southwest of Wichita Falls. J. B. Baker was immediately to the east of B. D. Hinkle. Then on December 7, 1889 B. D.'s son C. P. Hinkle appeared on the scene. He purchased the eastern 2/3 of J. B. Baker's property, and J. B. purchased the eastern 1/3 of B. D.'s property so that each of them had about 106 acres. From west to east they were B. D., J. B., and C. P. This arrangement did not last long. On March 12, 1890 C. P. Hinkle sold his tract and bought a 120 acre tract in the quarter section just south of the tract he sold. In January 1891 J. B. Baker and C. P. Hinkle both gave a strip of their land to the Wichita Valley Railway Co. for railroad construction. In September 1891 J. B. and his wife donated 1 acre of their land to the county to be used for a school.

On October 13, 1891 C. P. Hinkle sold the 120 acres he had bought 18 months earlier to D. W. Butcher (Daniel Butcher, who had lived very close to the Hinkles in Ellis Co). Not long thereafter on January 25, 1892 J. B. Baker sold his land. The Bakers probably returned to Ellis Co., but subsequent events indicate that C. P. Hinkle remained in Wichita Co. His father had died in December 1889 and he was probably farming his mother's land.

In January 1893 she used her land as security to borrow $500 even though the purchase price had not been fully paid. She was unable to repay the $500 and on June 13, 1894 the property was sold on the steps of the courthouse for $650 to Walter Parker. Five days later he sold it to C. P. Hinkle for $775 due February 1, 1895. C. P. was unable to pay the $775, and on January 7, 1896 the property was again sold at public auction. Walter Parker bought it for $650.

OBITUARY:

In "The Tomb" in the Waxahachie Enterprise, January 3, 1890:

"At Midlothian, Dec 18, Mr. B. D. Hinkle, aged 61 years."

He is buried in Midlothian. His tombstone has a Masonic symbol (square and compasses with a 'G' in the middle) on it and reads "B. D. HINKLE BORN May 12, 1828 DIED Dec. 18, 1889"

On January 28, 1890 in a sworn statement before the County Judge of Wichita Co., Texas Mrs. Maria J. Hinkle said that her husband B. D. Hinkle died intestate on December 18, 1889 in Ellis Co., Texas.
