RLH:
The following is from a research article about John Balthasar Hinkle and his children. It was sent to me by Robert L. Hess of Oakland, California, a descendent of John Balthasar. Numbers in brackets indicate notes which follow. See also pages 1456-57 of the HENCKEL GENEALOGICAL BULLETIN.
Johann Hinckel (John Hinkle[2,17,28]) born 3 Apr 1765,[2] probably at Germantown. In 1795 in Frederick County, Maryland, "John Hinkle, son of Baltis" purchased all the household utensils and other personal possessions that had belonged to his (uncle?) "John Hinkle son of George of Frederick County."[28] John (son of Baltis) married, first, on 22 May 1799, Maria Rennels,[29] and they had one daughter[13]; this family was living in Frederick County in 1800, at which time John's 63-year-old father apparently resided with them.[17] John married, second, 6 Jan 1803, widow Eva Runner at Frederick, Maryland[9,19,22]; she died within the year, on 14 Sep 1803.[19] On 28 Jan 1804 in Frederick County, John Hinkle married, third, Anna Barbara (Troxel) Greenamyer[22]; she was a widow with two children, and she and John together had six children.[20] In 1805 shortly after his father died, John and Anna Barbara moved to Jefferson County, (now West) Virginia, at about the same time as his cousin, Samuel Hinkle. John and Samuel remained in Jefferson County,[30-33] where their sons and daughters later continued to reside. John and Anna Barbara had a 230-acre farm there[31] with a dozen horses and three slaves.[32] In 1806 and 1807 John Hinkle served on a grand jury in Jefferson County, and in 1807 he and Samuel were appointed overseers to coordinate efforts of neighbors in maintaining the roads that passed by their farms.[33] John died in 1832[31,32]; his property was inventoried on 18 Mar 1832.[34] Anna Barbara stayed on in Jefferson County until after 1850. She then went to live in Emittsburg, Maryland, where she died 15 Jan 1857 and is buried.

BIRTH:
The oldest sibling George was born in Germantown on 3 Apr 1760 according to the register of St. Michael's Lutheran Church in Germantown. We know the birth dates (3 May 1762, 15 Dec 1763) of the next two children from the record of their confirmation years later at the Lutheran church in Frederick, Maryland. It is not certain where they were born. The births of the 5 youngest children from 26 Mar 1770 to 8 Oct 1782 are in the baptismal record of the Lutheran church at Frederick. John would seem to be a transitional case between the 3 oldest children and the 5 youngest --- and thus born between 1764 and 1769. "The Henckel Genealogy" on page 158 says that the was born 3 Apr 1765 in Frederick, Maryland, but then contradictorily says "no date of birth, baptism, or church confirmation found". I think we can only say that he was born about 1766. Since many years later John Grove said that he remembered his first cousin Jesse Hinkle born in 1763 as a childhood friend in Germantown (see notes 23 and 24 under John Balthasar Hinkle), it seems likely that Jesse's father John Balthasar did not leave Germantown and return to Frederick Co., Maryland until the late 1760's, in which case John was probably born in Germantown. The second and third siblings were presumably also born in Germantown.
