LAND:
On June 20, 1804 John Rowe of the District of Edgefield, South Carolina sells to Abner Hitt of the District of Laurens for $200 a 50 acre tract on which John Rowe formerly lived. (Laurens Co. Deed Records H/45) On December 10, 1808 Abner Hitt of Laurens District sells the same tract, said to be on Bank's Creek the waters of Saluda River, to Moses Curnal of Laurens District for $275. On October 15, 1811 Sarah Hitt, wife of Abner Hitt, relinquishes her rights of dower. (J/236)
PROBATE:
See "Laurens District Estate Record", Book F (1826-34, LDS microfilm 1029296), pgs 187, 191, 192:
pg 187: On November 24, 1828 the court grants letters of administration on the estate of Abner Hitt, dec'd, to John Hitt, who has entered into a bond with Thomas Hitt and Richard Sims.
pg 191: The total value of the appraisal dated December 9, 1828 is $354.33.
pg 192: The report of the sale on December 11, 1828 of the effects of Abner Hitt, dec'd, lists many buyers, none of whom bought very many items. The total value of the sale is $371.50. The buyers include Lewis Ball, Elizabeth Hitt, Abraham Hollingsworth, Jesse Hitt, Richard Sims, Peter Hitt, John Hitt Jun. and Thomas Hitt.
Probate records for Abner Hitt are also in Box 33, Package 5 (image 385/999) of Laurens Co. Estate Papers. They can be seen online at familysearch.org. Lamentably there is no indication of who the legatees were.
AGE:
Based on the census Abner was born between 1766 and 1774. I am not aware of any other evidence concerning his age.
General Notes: Wife - Sarah Sims
The will of Drury Sims, signed on January 31, 1832, implies that his son-in-law Abner Hitt and Abner's wife are both deceased. The 1820 census entry for Abner Hitt suggests that his wife was already deceased in 1820.
