GERMANNA RECORD NO. 1, pg 31:
Benjamin. Hitt, b. April 9, 1766, m. Jane Smith. Fauquier Co. Marriage Bonds, Vol. III, p. 76, shows the marriage bond of Benjamin Hitt and Jane Smith June 2, 1808, with James Morrison (the man who married Benjamin's sister, Sally, on the same date) signing the bond.
PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX LISTS:
From 1790 to 1797 Benjamin is a tithable in the household of his father. If he was born in 1766, then he was not counted as a tithable in his father's household until he was 24, contrary to the definitions in the tax list. Benjamin has an entry of his own for the first time in 1798 and he is in the list until at least 1819, the last year for which I have seen it. He always lives in the same district as his father. In 1798 he has only 1 slave; subsequently he has from 3 to 6, usually 4 or 5. From 1800 to 1819 he has from 7 to 13 horses.
MANUMISSION of SLAVES:
On January 17, 1803 Benjamin Hitt of Fauquier Co. manumitted a Negro man named Will after October 17, 1808, a Negro woman named Polly and all her future offspring after March 1, 1810 and a mulatto boy named Jack Bradford after June 1, 1820. Witnesses: Samuel Ayres, Daniel Hitt. (Fauquier Co. Deed Records 15/264)
LAND TAX LISTS:
Land Tax Lists are first available for Fauquier Co. in 1783. From 1804 until at least 1812 (the last year for which I have seen the list) Benjamin Hitt is the owner of a 200 acre tract which the tax list says he acquired from Harman Hitt. In 1809 he acquired a 150 acre tract from Elliott which he owned for only 2 years. Also in 1809 he acquired a 100 acre tract "of Hitt" and a 37.5 acre tract "of S. Rector, dec'd". He is in the tax list as the owner of these last 2 tracts until at least 1812.
EARL J. HITT:
The following was copied from the database of Earl J. Hitt in WorldConnect (no longer existent):
Benjamin appears in the 1800 Tax List for Culpeper County, Virginia, District of David Brown. (Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Vol 62, No. 1, January 1954, p. 124).
On 21 November 1811, William Elliott and Elizabeth his wife and Elijah Elliott and Elizabeth his wife, all of Bracken County, Kentucky, deeded 159 acres of land in Fauquier County, Virginia to Benjamin Hitt (Fauquier County, Virginia Deed Book 18, p. 319). On 13 February 1819, Benjamin Hitt and Jane his wife deeded 159.5 acres of land to James Morrison. (Fauquier County, Virginia Deed Book 23, p. 210). This transaction is given in Germanna Record No. 1 for Benjamin Marshall Hitt the son of Daniel and Joanna (Jett) Hitt, which is incorrect since Benjamin Marshall Hitt was not born until 1826.
Benjamin's will was filed at Warrenton, Fauquier County, Virginia.
Birth: 09 APR 1766 in Germantown, Fauquier County, Virginia
Death: 13 SEP 1844 in Rectortown, Fauquier County, Virginia
Burial: Methodist Churchyard Cemetery, Rectortown, Fauquier County, Virginia
