Daniel figures prominently in the 1858 will of his mother. He is not in the 1860 census and I cannot find him in 1870 and later. In the "Roster of Confederate Soldiers" there is a 1st lieutenant named D. M. Hitt in the 5th Alabama Infantry, New Co. F. It seems likely that Daniel M. Hitt was killed in the war.
