ARRIVAL IN ALABAMA:

Snedecor's Directory of Greene County for 1855-1856 (1963 reprint) has the following entry for David Hitt:

Hitt, David, planter, Pleasant Ridge, Hopewell -- 1818

Pleasant Ridge is his precinct of residence and Hopewell in his post office. 1818 is the year in which he settled in Greene Co.

1818 is consistent with the fact that the census consistently says that his daughter Eleanor Elizabeth was born about 1820 in Alabama, whereas it says once that the previous child (Larkin born August 15, 1817) was born in South Carolina and once that he was born in Alabama.

On page 79 in "A Goodly Heritage, Memories of Greene County" (Greene County Historical Society, 1977) we find that "The two earliest settlers in Pleasant Ridge were James H. Archibald and David Hitt in 1819".

LAND:

On January 29, 1803 James Smith of Laurens District, South Carolina sells to David Hitt of the same place for $200 50 acres out of a tract originally granted to William Robertson on Cain Creek. Witnesses: Jas. Griffin, Benjamin Cason, Moses Curnal. (Laurens Co. Deed Records H/6)

On March 24, 1817 David Hitt sells to Robert Cunningham for $500 a tract of 150 acres more or less in Laurens District on the waters of Saluda River where David Hitt now resides. Included in the sale are several Negroes. If David Hitt pays $2000 to Cunningham by January 1, 1819, then the conveyance is null and void. (K/173)

The following tracts in Greene Co. were patented to David Hitt:

W1/2SE section 1 T21N R1W 79.25 acres 4/16/1824
E1/2SE section 1 T21N R1W 79.25 acres 4/16/1824
E1/2SW section 6 T21N R1E 79.92 acres 4/20/1824
W1/2SW section 6 T21N R1E 79.92 acres 4/20/1824
W1/2NE section 7 T21N R1E 79.96 acres 5/25/1825
W1/2SE section 6 T21N R1E 79.92 acres 5/30/1833
E1/2SW section 31 T22N R1E 80.1 acres 5/30/1833
W1/2SE section 31 T22N R1E 80.1 acres 5/30/1833

The first 6 tracts are contiguous and are about 1/2 mile from the last 2, which are also contiguous. They are about 3 miles from the Tombigbee River, which is the boundary between Greene County to the east and Sumter Countiy to the west. In 1826 he sold 130 of the 160 acres that he owned in S1 T21N R1W to his first cousin Benjamin B. Hitt (I/657). Then in 1837 he sold his 160 acres in S31 T22N R1E to his son John M. Hitt (H/315). In March 1839 he sold all his remaining land in Greene Co (I/558). A few weeks later in May he bought 240 acres about 2 miles to the north in S18 T22N R1E (I/830), but in August he sold it (K/26). Then in November he bought 200 acres in S31 T22N R1E from his son John M. Hitt including the 160 acres that David had sold to his son in 1837 (K/382). In November 1853 David again sold all his land in Greene Co (S/490). In September 1855 he bought 80 acres in S33 T23N R1W near his son-in-law James D. Duncan and about 6 miles north of where he had previously lived (T/360). He was living there when he died in 1857. See also H/519, I/281, I/280, S/124.

When David Hitt sold 130 acres to his cousin Benjamin B. Hitt in 1826 he kept 30 acres in the SE corner of the quarter section that he owned, though which passed the road from Eutaw to Trussell's Ferry. There subsequently occurred a complicated series of transactions involving those 30 acres. John M. Hitt lived there for a while and there was a store on the road. See I/281, I/280, H/519, I/916, K/936, N/752.

PROBATE:

David Hitt died intestate but his estate was probated. See the following pages in Volume R of the Greene Co. Probate Court Records: 78-81, 84, 180, 213-14, 424-430.

On September 15, 1857 letters of administration on the estate of David Hitt, deceased, were issued to John M. Hitt. On that date he states to the court that David Hitt, late of Greene Co., died intestate and that he died seized and possessed of the following lands and Negroes:

W 1/2 of SW 1/4 of Section 33 T23 R1W in Greene Co., consisting of 80 acres

Nathem, male, 60 years of age
Jack, male, 50
George, male, 36
Lewis, male, about 28
Ginny, female, 50
Rachel, female, 44

He also states that the lawful heirs are:

Nancy A. Doss,
Benj. Williams and Edna Williams, his wife,
John M. Hitt,
Jas. D. Duncan and Elizabeth E. Duncan, his wife,
all of Sumter Co., Alabama,
Solomon J. Hitt,
Nazareth Thorn and his wife, Celia A. Thorn,
Jas. T. G. Everett and Eliza J. Everett, his wife,
Harris Samuel and his wife, F. A. Samuel,
all of whom reside near Polkville, Mississippi, and
L. H. Hitt, who resides near Summerville, Mississippi, Gholem being his post office.

All of them are of lawful age. John M. Hitt states that no fair, beneficial and equitable division can be made among the heirs without a sale of the above described lands and Negroes. He asks for authority to sell the property, and it is granted.

Three appraisers appointed by Franklin P. Snedcor, J.P., had submitted on September 5 an inventory of the estate and had estimated the total value to be $6004.25. They included the slaves but not the land. On September 16 John M. Hitt submitted a list of notes payable to his father and stated that cash on hand was $878.10. The total value of the notes is $3332. Some are rather strange. The amount of the note on Solomon J. Hitt, dated October 21, 1856 and due one day after date, is $1384. On Saturday, December 19, 1857, a sale took place on the 80 acre tract where the deceased resided. On pages 424-429 there is a list of items sold. Most were bought by David Hitt's children, and the total value of the sale was $6484.64. The major items were

80 acres of land, $804, Robt. Johnson

Nathan, $315, J. T. G. Everett
Jiney, $255, John M. Hitt
Jack and his wife Rachel, $1050, Harris Samuels
George, $1450, Benj. Williams
