PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX LISTS and BIRTH YEAR:

1782 is the first year that a list of men required to pay a tax on personal property is available for Fauquier Co., Virginia. Elijah Hitt never appears in the list as a member of his father's household and he has an entry of his own for the first time in 1786. According to the definitions in the list he was at that time 21 or older. If he became 21 in 1786 he was born about 1765. Elijah is in the list until at least 1819 (the last year for which I have seen it). He never has any slaves. From 1790 to 1804 he has 1 horse, from 1805 to 1814 two and occasionally three, and after 1815 he is back to one horse. In 1795 his brother Nathan is in his household.

Earl J. Hitt says that Elijah never married and that he lived with his brother Nathan in Warrenton.

On June 26,1810 William Hitt of Fauquier Co. sold to Elijah Hitt of the same place for £30 all his interest in a tract of about 217 acres whereon his father John Hitt, dec'd, resided, it being near the Fauquier Courthouse and adjoining the lands of the late Capt. James Bell, Frank James, Wiley Roy and Charles Lee. Witnesses: Johnye Tongue, H. Barron, Thomas Puckett. Signed William Hitt. (Fauquier Co. Deed Records 17/799)

On July 22, 1811 Elisha Curtis and his wife Sarah of Fauquier Co. sold to Elijah Hitt of the same place all their interest in a tract of 217 acres on which John Hitt, dec'd, lived, it being near the Fauquier Courthouse and adjoining the lands of the late Capt. James Bell, Francis James, Wiley Roy and Charles Lee. Witness: Dan'l Withers. Signed Elisha Curtis, Sarah (her X mark) Curtis. (18/210)

LAND TAX LISTS:

The Fauquier Co. Land Tax Lists are available from 1783 onward. Elijah is not in the lists until 1811 when it appears that he inherited some of his father's land. See notes under his father. Elijah has 79 acres in 1811 and in 1812 (the last year for which I have seen the list).
