WHO WAS HIS FATHER?:
See a more detailed discussion in notes under Rev. Benjamin Hitt.
There are 3 separate and distinct Henry Hitts of roughly the same age: Henry J., Henry H. and the Henry of Tuscaloosa Co. The probate records for Benjamin B. Hitt and for John Hitt show clearly that Henry H. is a son of Benjamin B. and that his wife Fanny is a daughter of John.
When Henry J. Hitt married, Charles Hitt was one of the bondsmen. Henry J. died in Sumter Co. and Charles Hitt was the administrator of his estate and Austin Hitt became the guardian of his minor children. If Charles is a son of Rev. Benjamin, then it seems likely that Austin and Henry J. are also sons of Rev. Benjamin.
No one has demonstrated any clear relationship between Rev. Benjamin and Henry Hitt of Tuscaloosa Co., although they are almost surely relatives of some kind. They have the same surname and lived in adjoining counties; Henry Hitt married in Sumter Co., one of the bondsmen being Daniel Hitt; and Henry had sons Benjamin and Marshall.
If the Henry of Tuscaloosa Co. is not a son of Rev. Benjamin, then who is his father? He may be a son of one of the men who remained in Laurens Co., South Carolina when Rev. Benjamin, David, Benjamin B, and John left Laurens Co. and went to Alabama. In the census Abner Hitt (Peter's son) has a son of the right age to be Henry. Henry could also be a son of Jesse Hitt (Lazarus's son). A slot in the 1810 census is available for him. Since Jesse's widow and two of his daughters made the migration to Alabama and were in Sumter Co. in 1840, Jesse would seem to be the better choice.
