EARL J. HITT:
The following was copied from the database of Earl J. Hitt in WorldConnect (no longer existent):
Joel appears as an independent tithable in Fauquier County in 1787, and with his birth date of 1765 he had just turned 22. Joel's Estate Records: Inventory, Henry County, Kentucky Will Book 1, page 138, 1807; Allotment of Slaves, Will Book 1, page 303, 1812; Administrator's Account, Will Book 2, page 15, 1813. The inventory includes eight negros and several pages listing livestock, personal and household goods.
All of Joel and Elizabeth's children are believed to have been born in the log cabin that still exists approximately 0.3 mile north of State Road 53 on US 42 in Oldham County (originally in Jefferson County, a part of Shelby County in 1792, a part of Henry County in 1798, and finally in 1823 a part of Oldham County). The property which is approximately 9 acres in size includes a filled-in cave, a spring and a burial grounds, all of which are visible from the log cabin. The property is part of a parcel of land 79 acres in size which was part of the 355 acres originally owned by Joel and Elizabeth. Elizabeth and her second husband, Edward Tyler, sold the land to John and Frances (Hitt) Button, Elizabeth's son-in-law and daughter. The land was transferred to the trustees of a proposed city named Lynchberg for use in establishing a County Seat, however the city was never developed and the Coutny Seat was established at La Grange.
The original log cabin was built with two floors, the lower floor consisted of two rooms and a staircase leading to the upper floor. The upper floor was a one room loft with a divider down the middle. After the original construction, additions were made to the cabin by attaching one room cabins moved from other sites in Oldham County. The original cabin fell into dis-repair, but in 1964 a major restoration project was begun by Mayor Charles Farnsley purchased the cabin from a Mckenzie family.
