John Miller's plantation home "Mountain Green" was built in an area above Washington. It was a large brick home ownership of which passed to John's son Benjamin Franklin. There were quarters for 15 slaves in 1830 and 17 slaves in 1840. The home stayed in the Miller family until 1941.
It is believed that John served in the Revolutionary War in Capt. David Anell's company; was mustered out of the service in 1783 as a sergeant. He is referenced in a number of D.A.R. records.
On 23 November 1818, John was appointed guardian of Lucinda, Polly, Aldridge, Nimrod, and Betsey Hitt, orphans of Peter Hitt, deceased, the brother of his wife Nancy. John posted a bond of $5000 with Martin and Thomas Porter as security; JP: Joseph Blackwell, William Gibson, John P. Smith, and Alexander P. Kelly; Witness: John A. W. Smith.

Nancy was named an heir in the will of her brother, Nimrod Hitt, probated in Culpeper County on 19 September 1825. Nimrod's will names "sister Nancy Miller" and appoints his brother-in-law, John Miller, executor.
Nancy's will was written 25 October 1847 and is recorded in Rappahannock County, Virginia
