LAND in SOUTH CAROLINA:

On August 3, 1813 James Golding of Union District, South Carolina sold to Reuben Hitt of the same place for $213.75 a tract of 142.5 acres on Mudlic Creek, part of a tract of 280 acres granted to James McGill May 15, 1780. (Laurens Co. Deed Records K/137)

BURIAL:

Memorial # 17768311 in Find-a-Grave says that Reuben Hitt (1781-1855 )was buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery in Webster Co., Mississippi.
Memorial # 32636380 in Find-a-Grave says that Ruben Hitt (1781-1855) was buried in Pilgrim's Rest Baptist Church Cemetery, Webster Co., Mississippi.

Both show a picture of a memorial plaque with the following inscription:

Born in Virginia, the son of a Methodist preacher, Reuben moved with his family to Laurens District, South Carolina in 1785. Here he married Martha Hamilton, who died at an early age. In 1835, with his six children, Reuben moved to Webster County, Mississippi. Upon returning to Laurens in 1842 he married Nancy Hitt, a fourth cousin, and in 1844 they settled in Webster County where their three sons and two daughters were reared. Nancy died in 1899. Reuben, possessed with the pioneer spirit of his great-grandfather, Peter Hitt, who left his native Germany in 1714 to settle Germania, a far western outpost in Virginia, was among the first white settlers of this region, seeking fertile land to make a better home for his family and the generations to come. His descendants have spread from Webster, Calhoun and Marion Counties to every section of the country. It is to Reuben Martin Hitt, buried at this site, and to his brave and determined pioneer spirit we humbly dedicate this memorial.

EARL J. HITT:

The following was copied from the database of Earl J. Hitt in WorldConnect (no longer existent):

Reuben moved with his parents to Laurens County, South Carolina in 1785, where he lived until the death of his first wife, Martha. In 1816 after the death of Martha, Reuben moved with his children, four sons and two daughters, to Calhoun County, Mississippi. In 1842 he returned to Laurens County to marry Nancy Hitt, his second wife. They moved to Choctaw County (now Webster County), Mississippi where their children were born. It is said that Reuben was 78 years old when his last child was born, however, this is probably not true. According to the 1850 census, Reuben was 70 years old and his second wife, Nancy, was 28; their youngest child, Washington was born in 1853 which would have made Reuben 73 or 74 years old when his last child was born.

Birth: 24 MAY 1781 in Fauquier County, Virginia

General Notes: Wife - Nancy Hitt

If Reuben Martin Hitt returned to Laurens Co., South Carolina and married Nancy Hitt there, as is claimed, then a process of elimination suggests that she was a daughter of Larkin Hitt. She would be his first cousin, once removed.
