REBECCA & RICHARD:
There is no clear proof that Rebecca and Richard Hitt are the children of Lazarus Hitt and his first wife Charlotte Stephens, but in the 1850 census they are living in the household of Moore Stephens, who is probably the brother of Charlotte, and Charlotte died relatively soon after they were born. They are both 10 years old in 1850 and so we assume that they were twins. One can conjecture that Charlotte died shortly after their birth, that Lazarus was ill prepared to take care of two tiny babies and two other small children, that they were taken in by Charlotte's brother Moore Stephens, and that after Lazarus remarried in 1845 they continued to live with their uncle.
In the decade of the 1850's Moore Stephens was the guardian of three minor children of Richard Hitt and Easter Stephens. Rebecca and Richard were not orphans and there is no mention of them in the guardianship records of the Orphans' Court. There is no record of their marrying in Sumter Co., and I cannot find them in the census after 1850.
LAND:
The following tract in Sumter Co. was patented to Lazarus Hitt:
<pre>
SESE S9 T17N R3W 40.13 acres 8/1/1837
</pre>
In June 1846 he purchased 10 acres in the SE corner of SW S9 (I/289). Then in September 1850 he sold a 130 acre tract in S9 consisting of the just mentioned 2 tracts and W1/2SE, which had been patented to his father in 1837 (L/732).
