TAX LISTS in FAUQUIER CO.:
From 1797 until 1806 Peter Hitt, Jr. is in the Fauquier Personal Property Tax List and then in 1807 his widow Lucy takes his place. She appears only once -- in 1807. Peter was about 21 when he first appeared in the list although the titles in the list indicate that he should have appeared for the first time at age 16. The columns are 1) white males >21 (1783-1787) or white male tithables >16 (1788--), 2) white males 16-21, 3) Negroes (1782) or Negroes >16 (1783--), 4) Negroes <16 (1783-1787) or Negroes <16 and >12 (1788--), 5) horses/mares/colts/mules, 6) cattle, 7) amount of tax, 8) names of tithables >16 in the household other than the person chargeable with the tax.
1797 is the first year that his father is designated as Peter Hitt, Senr. rather than as just Peter Hitt. Peter Hitt, Jr. is often next to his father in the list, and they, along with Peter's brother Reuben, are always in the same district. Neither Peter, Jr. nor Reuben is in the Fauquier Co. Land Tax List prior to 1812 (the last year for which I have seen it).

GUARDIANSHIP OF MINOR CHILDREN:
"Fauquier County, Virginia Guardian Bonds 1759-1871" (John K. Gott, 1990):
pg 23: George James, gdn. of Lucinda, Polly, Aldridge, Nimrod and Elizabeth Hitt, orphs. of Peter Hitt, Jr., dec'd. 24 Jan 1810. Sec: William James, Reuben Hitt.
pg 34: John Miller, gdn. of Lucinda Hitt, Polly Hitt, Alex.(?) Hitt, Nimrod Hitt, Betsey Hitt, orphs. of Peter Hitt. 23 Nov 1818. For $5000. Sec: Martin Porter, Thomas Porter.
pg 37: Asa Hume, gdn. of Mary Hitt, Aldridge Hitt, Nimrod Hitt, Elizabeth Hitt, orphs. of Peter Hitt, Jr., dec'd. 28 Dec 1819. For $2400. Sec: Thornton Buckner.
George James is the stepfather of the children and Reuben Hitt is their father's brother. John Miller is their father's brother-in-law. When Elizabeth married in 1826 Asa Hume gave his consent. Note that these children are the principal beneficiaries in the will of their uncle Nimrod Hitt. Each receives one young slave. Peter Hitt's children are also named in the following deed:
Whereas Peter Hitt, Sen., now deceased, was during his lifetime possessed of a tract of land in Fauquier Co. containing 417 acres agreeable to a survey made January 29, 1810 by Charles Kemper and whereas the said Peter Hitt, Sen. died intestate, the said tract of land was divided among his representatives by 4 commissioners appointed by the County Court of Fauquier Co. in which division Lot No. 9 fell to Lucinda Hitt, Polly Hitt, Aldridge Hitt, Nimrod Hitt and Elizabeth Hitt, infant children of Peter Hitt, Jun., deceased, and the Court appointed John Kemper, Daniel Payne and William Pickett, Jr. as commissioners on behalf of the infant children, and the lot was sold at public auction on April 1, 1811. Reuben Hitt purchased it for $315.37 1/2, and on April 12, 1811 the three commissioners just mentioned conveyed it to Reuben Hitt. (Fauquier Co. Deed Records 18/186)
PROBATE:
On page 227 of Fauquier Co. Will Book 7 there is an inventory and appraisement of the estate of Peter Hitt, Jun'r, dec'd, dated December 10, 1818. There are only 4 items. The total value is $2275. Since Peter Hitt, Jun'r died about 1806 it may be that his widow Lucy died in 1818. George and Nancy were inherited from her father-in-law Peter Hitt, Sen'r, who died in 1810.
