TAX LISTS in FAUQUIER CO.:

In 1797 Reuben Hitt is present for the first time in the Fauquier Personal Property Tax List. He was about 19 when he first appeared in the list although the titles in the list indicate that he should have appeared for the first time at age 16. In 1804 he has 1 slave and 3 horses. Prior to then he has no slaves and 1 or 2 horses. He is absent from the list until 1811. From 1811 to 1819 (the last year for which I have seen the list) he has from 3 to 7 slaves, mostly commonly 5 or 6, and he has from 1 to 7 horses. He is always in the same district as his father and his brother Peter, Jr. In 1812 and before Reuben is never in the Fauquier Co. Land Tax List. I have not seen the list subsequent to 1812.
