BEDFORD CO., VIRGINIA TAX RECORDS:

Land tax records are available from 1782 onward. Josiah Lockett is never present.

Personal property tax records are available from 1782 onward. Categories in the tax lists vary significantly from year to year, which complicates comparison and presentation of data.

Between 1782 and 1790 the first column in the tax list is labelled 'white males over 21'. After 1803 the first column is 'white males over 16'. Between 1791 and 1802 the term 'white tithe' is used. I feel confident that it refers to white males over 16. See the following article concerning the concept of 'tithe' and 'tithable':

To simplify the presentation of data I am omitting 1) all tithes (1793-94) and 2) tax paid (1798-1803,1815-16).

The columns below are
<pre>
1) Wo21 -- White males over 21
2) Wo16 -- White males over 16/white tithes
3) Wint -- White males above 16 and under 21
4) Bo16 -- Blacks over 16
5) Bu16 -- Blacks under 16
6) Bint -- Blacks over 12 and under 16 but in 1815 over 9 and under 12
7) Bo12 -- Blacks over 12
8) Btot -- Total blacks
9) Hors -- Horses, mares, colts, mules
10) Catl --- Cattle

Note from Craig: This small Lockett burial plot is located about 2 miles south of Castalian Springs near Belote's Bend. It is located in low lying land near the river and is very, very difficult to find. The area is overgrown with dense, tangled timber and brush and briars. I don't believe we would have ever found this burial site if not for the expert guidance of Mr. Jim Bybee who farms nearby. He saved the day as far as locating that burial plot. There are two graves in this plot: one for Josiah and next to him is buried his daughter Mary "Polly" (Lockett) Roberts.

The inscription on Josiah's headstone: "Sacred to the memory of JOSIAH LOCKETT was born July 15th 176? and departed life the Sept 16th 1840"

Mary "Polly" Lockett Roberts headstone: "Sacred to the memory of MARY ROBERTS was born November 27th 1797 and departed life August 21st 1841"

Each grave has a headstone and a footstone that is a scaled-down version of the headstone.

BIRTH YEAR:

Most researchers say that Josiah was born 13 Jul 1765. They provide no evidence for that assertion.

General Notes: Wife - Jency Jeter

The will of Henry Jeter signed May 27, 1807 mentions his daughter Gincy Lockett. (Bedford Co., Virginia Will Book 5, pg 309)

Note from Craig: This small Lockett burial plot contains only the graves of these two people, although there are a few other field stones nearby which might have been markers at one time for persons unknown. It is located on a hilltop about 1000 feet south of Preacher Robertson Road at the point where the road turns from east-west to mainly a north-south direction. It's about 1/2 mile east of Belote's Cemetery.

Ginsey headstone inscription: "Sacred to the memory of GINSEY LOCKETT Was born July 4th 1773 and departed this life June the 19th 1861"

Winifred's headstone inscription: "Sacred to the memory of WINEFRED LOCKETT was born August 31st 1815 and departed this life March 27th 1852"

Ginsey and Winifred also have footstones which are scaled-down versions of the headstone.
