DEPOSITION:

On August 1, 1692 Benjamin Lockett gave a deposition in a case before the Henrico County Court involving hogs that were alleged to have been stolen. From his age we deduce that he was born about 1669.

Benjamin Lockett gave another deposition in the same case dated ambiguously August 1 and August 8, 1692, which he signed Ben Lockett. It is on page 334. It appears that Benjamin can write his own name in contrast to his brother James, who on August 1 gave a deposition in the same case and made a mark (I).

On July 19, 1691 in Bristoll Parish in Henrico Co. Benj'a (his B mark) Lockett is one of 12 jurors involved in an inquisition into the cause of the death of Martha Howlett. Eight of the jurors sign their name; 4 make a mark.

This entry follows three entries dated October 26, 1692, January 14, 1692, and 1692. It seems obvious that the dates are Old Style. The date in the ancestry.com database 'Virginia Marriages 1680-1800' is February 25, 1691/1692.

page 269, image 321/548 -- On July 6, 1730 Benjamin Lockett Senj'r of the parish of Britoll and the County of Henrico "for the Natural Love and Affection that I bear unto my Daughter Deborah" gives and bequeaths to her "one Negro Girll Named Lucy". He also gives her one bed and furniture commonly called her bed, four head of cattle two young and two old, and one horse or mare about two or three years old.

page 270, image 322/548 -- On July 6, 1730 Benjamin Lockett Senj'r of the parish of Britoll and the County of Henrico "for the Naturall Love and Affection that I Bear unto my Daughter Martha Walthall" gives and bequeaths to her "one Negro Girll Named Sarah".

page 290, image 333/548 -- On December 13, 1730 Benjamin Lockett Sen'r of Henrico Co. "for the Natural Love and Affection that I bear unto my Daughter Jane Haskins" gives and grants to her "one Negro Woman Called by the Name of Tabb". The deed is signed "Benja Lockett". It was acknowledged in court by Benjamin the first Monday in January, 1730 (Old Style).
