General Notes: Husband - Samuel Walton

The following, slightly reformatted to improve readability, is from Byberry Waltons (Norman Walton Swayne, 1958), pgs 92-93:

193 SAMUEL WALTON (5), born probably around 1750, died Nov. 10,
1823, supposed son of 72 Benjamin Wa1ton & Catherine of Byberry Twp, Phila. Co., Pa., married Nov. 6, 1776 Elizabeth Morris, born 29 June 1752, died 12.23.1857 in her 106th year, daughter of Reese Morris & Catherine Castner. This is mostly from a notebook record apparently written by the above Elizabeth. In the back of this book is a note that Elizabeth Walton will be 91 years old if she lives until the 29th of June next 1843. In 1930 the book was in possession of Rev. Horace Andrews Walton, great grandson, who allowed it to be copied.

Abington Mtg says 30th of 6th mo 1777 Horsham says Samuel Walton was married by a priest to a non member without consent of his parents. Testimony against him to be drawn. 25th of 8th mo 1777 he will not appeal. Testimony to be read at Horsham. 30th of 9th mo 1793 Samuel attended, acknowledged and condemned the conduct for which he was testified against some years ago. He now lives in the territory of another meeting. 30th of 12th no 1793 after two continuations, the committee finding a good account of his later conduct, and 1.27.1794 he being present, he was again rec'd into membership.

31st of 3rd mo 1794 he moved to Phila. Northern District, and deaths of daughters Mary and Kitty are in records of that meeting. Friends Intelligencer says when wife Elizabeth died she was member of Green St. Mtg in Phila. Phila. Public Ledger says her funeral was to be from the home of John J. Morris, 328 Crown above Wood Seventh Day, to proceed to Fair Hill. William Miller Cash, in 1940 caretaker there, says according to the book Elizabeth Walton, aged 105, was the oldest person buried at Fair Hill Mtg.

The 1790 census has Samuel of Northern Liberties, Phila. with a family of one male over 16, two under 16 and three females. Phila. directories list Samuel from 1791 to 1822, mostly cabinet maker, the last four years shop keeper, nearly always on North 3rd, from 1803 to 1822 at 331 N 3rd. The will of Samuel of Northern Liberties, cabinet maker, drawn 9 Dec. 1818, proved in Phila. Nov. 20, 1823, named wife Elizabeth, children Sarah, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Hannah and Daniel. There are several deeds in which Samuel's name appears with those of George Walton and Thomas Walton, believed his brothers. Oct. 20, 1795 Samuel was named admr of the Phila. estate of Arnold Richardson, who left widow Lydia and daughter Margaret.

One reason for suspecting Samuel was son of Benjamin is that the latter March 6, 1783 rec'd a lot on 2nd St. in Southwark from Joseph Richardson of Phila., go1dsmith, & wife Mary. Joseph of Phila., silversmith, died 1784, and Mary, died 1787, named in their wills the same children, of whom daughter Elizabeth rec'd a lot on German St. next Benjamin Walton. Nov. 3, 1795 George Walton of Phila., carpenter, conveyed some property to Samuel in trust for the Arnold Richardson estate. June 8, 1799 Samuel deeded to George Walton a lot which Arnold Richardson had promised George and George had partly paid for. June 19, 1797 Samuel of Northern Liberties deeded to Thomas Walton, highest bidder at public sale, for 340 pounds, a lot belonging to the Richardson estate. One day later Thomas, corn merchant of Northern Liberties, reconveyed the same lot to Samuel at the same price. This lot, or part of it, was deeded May 7, 1810 by Samuel & wife Elizabeth to their son Isaiah, plaisterer of Northern Liberties. Aug. 5, 1820 they deeded to son Jeremiah, cabinet maker of Northern Liberties, a lot on Delaware 3rd St. next a lot of George Walton, which also probably was part of the same, for Samuel had rec'd it from Thomas in 1797. Oct. 3, 1822 Samuel & wife Elizabeth deeded to son Daniel, cabinet maker of Northern Liberties, a lot on 4th St. Marriages of the three sons are from St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Phila. Births of these nine children are from the notebook:
