"Lewis R. has a home in Wray, Colorado, but is now spending a season in Kentucky, for the health of his wife, and to enjoy old home associations. He is a house joiner, and an active and efficient man. His wife was Miss Sallie Wade, who was raised in Illinois.
"The last two mentioned sons [Lewis R. and Marshall E.] were soldiers of the Federal army in the 60's; Lewis in the 9th Iowa, and Marshall in the 49th Kentucky."
Comment: Lewis R. Parker died in 1906 and is buried in Wray, Colorado. His tombstone indicates that he was a sergeant in the 17th Iowa Infantry. See Find a Grave, Memorial # 24313840.

An Application for Headstone indicates that Lewis R. Parker was a 4th Sergt. in Company C of the 17th Ia. Vol. He enlisted 27 Feb 1862 and was discharged 3 Feb 1863. A flat marker was shipped September 19, 1940 to Fred Parshall in Wray, Colorado.

Dr. Barr received a telegram last night from Long Beach, Cal., stating that L. R. Parker had died at that place. Mr. Parker just left here for California about three weeks ago, hoping the change would benefit his health and the news of his death will come as a shock to his many friends.

Died
Louis R. Parker was born in Wayne county, Kentucky, April 20, 1838. Was converted at the age of 16 years and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church South at Somerset, Kentucky. He removed to Illinois while quite a young man and was licensed to exhort there at the age of 24 years. He thence removed to Missouri, where in his 38th year he was licensed to preach and served as pastor in the Savannah and Babylon charges. At the age of 48 or in 1886 he removed with his family to Colorado where he has resided ever since. He worked at his trade as a carpenter and also farmer and was a factor in the early settlement of this part of Colorado. He organized the Sunday School at Glendale and was connected with planting Methodism there. All his work in the West was done in the M. E. church, there being no South church here. He had spent a large portion of the past two years in Kentucky trying to regain his health, and a few weeks ago with his son, Samuel, and wife, and daughter, Crittendon, he went to California, where he died July 19, 1906, aged 68 years, three months and 29 days. Thus will he sleep.
The remains arrived in Wray on No. 14 Wednesday evening, and were conveyed to the residence by Amos Carl, who had charge of the funeral arrangements. Thursday morning at 10 o'clock services were held in the Methodist church by Rev. Carson, who delivered a very impressive sermon, after which the body was taken to Grandview for interment.
The Rattler joins the many friends of the bereaved family in extending sympathy in this sad hour.
We take this method of expressing our sincere thanks to the friends of our family who so willingly assisted us during the illness and burial of our husband and father, Louis R. Parker.

Lewis R. Parker's wife, Sarah Elizabeth Wade, was a 3rd cousin once removed in the Hinds line of Catharine Grinstead, the wife of Lewis R.'s younger brother Marshall Emory Parker.
MIDDLE NAME:
Lewis R. Parker clearly had a middle name, or at least a middle initial, unlike his father and his nephew (Marshall Emory's son and my grandfather). In public records that I have seen Lewis R. Parker's middle initial is generally present; only rarely is he referred to as 'Lewis Parker'. In the local newspaper in Wray Colorado he is most commonly referred to as 'L. R. Parker'.
I have a copy of a document sent to me by Ellen Parker Westbrook, a great-granddaughter of Lewis R. Parker. It consists of two parts. The bottom part is typewritten and is in the form of a letter written by Dimice DeForest Parker to her niece Ann Parker (daughter of John Emerson Parker). It is primarily a brief description of the life of Rev. Lewis Parker, the father of Lewis R. Parker. The top part is a hand-drawn tree structure created by Lewis R. Parker's daughter-in-law Nellie Wilber, wife of Samuel Wade Parker. It indicates that Lewis R. Parker's middle name was 'Rousseau'. In the tree under "Lewis Rousseau m. Sarah Elizabeth Wade" are their 6 children and all or most of their grandchildren.

Gone to Her Rest
Mrs. L. R. Parker died at her home in Wray last Monday morning from the effects of a paralytic stroke. She was stricken about six weeks ago and her relatives and friends had little hopes of her recovery. She grew gradually weaker and weaker until her vitality was exhausted, and then quietly passed away.
The funeral services were held in the M. E. Church Tuesday afternoon, and were conducted by the pastor, F. W. Irnboden, assisted by Rev. C. L. Harrington of Vernon.
The pastor used as his text 2 Timothy 4: 6 to 8 and spoke briefly of a victorious Christian life.
The congregation joined with the choir in singing some of the old church hymns: Faith of Our Fathers, How Firm A Foundation and Sweet By and By. As a special selection, Mrs. E. M. Hedrick and Mrs. T. B. Groves sang "Saved By Grace."
After the services the funeral procession made its way to the Grand View Cemetery, where the body was laid to rest.
Sallie E. Wade was born in Adams County, Illinois, April 6, 1834. At the age of about sixteen years she was bereft of her parents and then went to Kentucky and made her home with an uncle. In her Kentucky home, on April 22, 1857 she was married to L. R. Parker who preceded her to the better land in July, 1906. To this union were born 9 children, five of whom are living, as follows: Samuel and John L. Parker of California, Mrs. Mary Jones, Miss Crittie Parker and Alvin Parker of this community.
After her marriage to Mr. Parker the family lived for a few years in Adams County, Illinois, then moved to Kentucky and Missouri. In 1886 the family came to Yuma county, Colo., and settled in Wray and the neighboring vicinity. Since the death of her husband she, with her daughter, Crittie, have been living in the home place in Wray.
Mother Parker has been in poor health for several years past, and about seven weeks ago was stricken with paralysis from which she did not rally but failed slowly in health until Monday morning at seven o'clock when she peacefully and quietly passed to her eternal rest, at the age of 78 years, 6 mo., 22 days.
All of the children, with the exception of John, have been attending faithfully the bedside of their mother and giving unto her their loving ministries during her last days.
Mother Parker was converted in her girlhood days, united with the Methodist Episcopal Church, became the wife of a Methodist preacher and for over 62 years has been a faithful and true disciple of her Lord. She loved her church as her chief joy, to do her heavenly Father's will was her pleasure, and to attend the worship and service of God in the sanctuary was her great delight. She was indeed a Mother in Israel.
