He is in the sequence William Hitt, Joseph Hitt, 2x, Joseph Hitt, Jr. The Personal Property Tax List indicates that in 1820 William and his younger brother James are in one household. James is probably the male 16-26 although in fact he is about 33 years old.

The surname is clearly 'Hill' not 'Hitt'. However the entry is next to Joel Hitt and it does not match the 'William Hill' in 1820 and there is no 'William Hill' in 1840.

BIRTH YEAR and PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX LISTS:
William has his own entry in the Culpeper Co. Personal Property Tax List for the first time in 1811. The 1850 census indicates that he was born about 1787. William's father has 2 tithables in his household in 1803 and in 1804. If William became 16 and thus tithable in 1803, then he may be that additional tithable. From 1811 to 1823 (I have not seen the tax list after 1823) William has one horse and initially he has no slaves and finally 2. There are 2 districts in the county and in 1811 and later William lives in the same district (Daniel Brown) as his father. The tax lists for 1805-1810 are missing. From 1801 through 1804 there is a William Hitt in the other district. I believe that this William Hitt is the youngest son of John Hitt, son of the immigrant, but some of these entries might correspond to the William Hitt of these notes.
LAND in CULPEPER CO.:
On September 8, 1810 John Barnes and Elizabeth, his wife, of Culpeper Co. sold to William Hitt of the same county for $250 a tract of about 25 acres in Culpeper Co. on which John Barnes then resided and adjoining lands of Peter Marye and Daniel Smith. (Culpeper Co. Deed Records EE/37)
On March 15, 1816 John Reynolds of Culpeper Co. sells to William Hitt of the same county for $100 his interest in certain slaves to which he may become entitled as an heir of John Reynolds, dec'd. The slaves are now in the possession of Mrs. Jane Russell and she holds them as her dower slaves belonging to the estate of John Reynolds, dec'd. Witnesses: Wm. Ward, James Miller, Humphrey Hill. (HH/71)
On September 23, 1818 Thompson Utterback and Elizabeth, his wife, of Culpeper Co. sell to William and James Hitt of the same county for $1265 a tract of 115 acres in Culpeper Co. on Bullocks Run. It is described by metes and bounds and adjoins Boughan, James Utterback, Brown, Coleman's old corner now Brown's. (Culpeper Co. Deed Records KK/132)
According to the Culpeper Co. Land Tax List William Hitt owns 25 acres in Daniel Brown's district in 1811 and in 1812. From 1821 to at least 1829 (the last year for which I have seen the list) William and James Hitt are owners of a 115 acre tract, which is in Daniel Brown's district about 11 miles west of the courthouse. In 1826 William is the owner of 127 acres which is said to have come from Jos. Hitt's estate and he continues to own it until at least 1829. Joseph Hitt the father owned 150 acres. William inherited 127 acres and another son Joseph inherited 55 acres. 150 acres miraculously became 182!
On October 5, 1827 William purchases a tract of about 55 acres in Culpeper Co. on Hazel River from John Strother and his wife Elizabeth for $300. (UU/7)
In the Land Tax List William is the owner of a 55 acre tract on Hazel River about 11 miles west of the courthouse in 1828 and in 1829.
MILITARY SERVICE:
The following is from "War of 1812 Pension Application Files Index 1812-1815" at ancestry.com (image 844):
Soldier: William Hitt
Widow: Polly Hitt
Service: Capt Nalle's Co. 2 Regt. Va. Mil.

In the "War of 1812 Service Records" database on ancestry.com there is a William Hitt who was a private in Bramham's 41st Regiment of Virginia Militia. Thadeus Hitt and his brother Alexander of Fauquier Co. were both in the 41st regiment. Perhaps William was in both the 2nd regiment and in the 41st.
EARL J. HITT:
The following was copied from the database of Earl J. Hitt in WorldConnect (no longer existent):
William is believed to have served in the War of 1812, 41st Regiment (Bramham's), Virginia Militia, and that his widow Polly applied for a pension based upon her husband's service. (War of 1812: Virginia; Bounty Land and Pension Applicants; by Patrick G. Wardell; Heritage Books; p. 203)
William and his wife Polly were named In a summons dated 18 October 1844 in a Chancery Suit (file No. 14) filed in Madison County, Virginia (see notes for Thomas SPARKS).
William's estate was inventoried on 1 November 1865 and assigned a value of $1578.87 by Mumford Hitt, J. M. Duncan, and Edward Burgess. (Culpeper County, Virginia Will Book V, p. 275).
