The following is from Charlotte Hall, a great-granddaughter of Elmina Reese and John R. Snider.
William was the third child of Henry and Elizabeth. He was born in Echola, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama in 1843. He was eight years old when his mother died and his father married Hettie McGee. They lived in Echola until Henry and Hettie sold their land in December, 1853 and moved to the North River area of Northport, Tuscaloosa Co.
William enlisted in the Civil War, Confederate States of America, 41st Alabama Infantry, Company G in Tuscaloosa on May 8, 1862. He was 19 years old. He served with his brother James. His uncle, James White, was Captain of Company G.
On the November to December 1862 report, he was listed as AWOL since August 15, 1862. In August, Company G went from Murfreesboro to Manchester, Tennessee. They were in battle from Deckard, Tennessee to Tullahoma, then to Manchester.
On February 6, 1863 Williiam deserted at Manchester. He was present on the March to April 1863 report. On April 21, 1863 Company G was on a scouting expedition and marched seven miles toward McMinnville and back.
He was sick in the hospital on the May to June 1863 report. Company G was in Camp Hurricane, Mississippi during these months.
On the July to August 1863 report, he was a patient at Lauderdale Springs Hospital, Lauderdale Springs, Mississippi. On the report for September to October 1863, he was detailed as cook at Lauderdale Springs Hospital.
Company G left Camp Hurricane and was in the battle of Chickamauga on September 19-20, 1863. In November and December 1863 they marched, fought battles, and were in the trenches in Tennessee, ending their journey at Morristown, Jefferson Co., Tennessee. At that time, the weather was cold and their uniforms and boots were in terrible condition. From Tennessee they went to Peterburg, Virginia.
William was admitted to General Hospital, Peterberg, Virginia on January 14, 1864. He was admitted with debilities (weakness, fatigue).
On January 29, 1864, William died of typhoid fever. He was probably buried in Petersberg, Virginia in an unmarked grave.
