MIGRATION NORTHWESTWARD:
In the 1880 census F. P. Walton is living in Hill Co., Texas, and he married there in 1881. He is in the Hill Co. tax list for the first time in 1878, He has tools, implements, machinery ($75), 1 horse/mule ($10), and miscellaneous ($15). He pays $4.28 in taxes including a $2 state poll tax and a $1 county poll tax. He is not in the tax list in 1879, but he is there in 1880, 1881, 1884, and 1885. His eldest child was born in 1882 in Meridian in Bosque Co., which adjoins Hill Co. on the west. F. P. Walton is never in the Bosque Co. tax list. By 1886 when his second child was born, the family had moved northward to Wichita Falls. That child was named Newton Wichita. F. P. Walton is in the Wichita Co. tax list for the first time in 1887. He has 1 wagon worth $30 and 2 horses/mules worth $70. He is missing in 1888 but is in the tax list in 1889, 1890, and 1891. In 1891 he has 2 wagons worth $45, 3 horses/mules worth $200, goods, wares & merchandise worth $300 and a total of $591. F. P. Walton operated a livery stable in Wichita Falls according to Elizabeth Collins, his granddaughter. Her mother Elizabeth Walton told her that she was 8 when the family moved to Claude. Initially F. P. Walton operated a livery stable in Claude (again according to his granddaughter) and then later he had a grocery store.
The third child, Claudia, was born December 21, 1891. On January 8, 1953 her older sister Lizzie Collins stated in a delayed birth certificate that Claudia was born in Wichita Falls. Claudia's son Clyde told his daughter Elaine that his mother was still unnamed when the family moved from Wichita Falls to Claude and that she was named for their new home. We can thus date the move to very late 1891 or early 1892.

At some point in 1903 or later F. P. Walton hired a company from Missouri to construct a 2-story building of reinforced concrete and brick on lot 8 of block 2. He had a store on the first floor, and he and his wife had a rooming house on the second floor. According to his granddaughter Elizabeth Collins, there was a communal kitchen in a room at the back which had a door that opened onto a porch from which a stairs led to the ground. There were no bathrooms, so presumably there was a privy, probably a two-holer, behind the building. On the north side of the front of the building is a door that leads to a stairway to the second floor.
In 2008 that building is still standing but vacant. Some of the windows on the second floor have been replaced by metal windows, and some have been filled in with brick. The rear porch is gone, as is the door, but the doorway is still there. Most of the interior partitions on the second floor have been removed.
A one-story building has been built on lot 7. It was presumably built after the heirs sold the property in 1926.
*** Lots 21-24, block 46, North Claude Addition ***
January 24, 1908 -- Lots 21-24 -- Mrs. A. P. Appling, widow, to F. P. Walton, both of Armstrong Co., for $109.05. (13/327)
