BEDFORD CO., VIRGINIA PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX LIST:
Joseph T. Reese is in the Bedford Co., Virginia personal property tax list for the first time in 1820 and is there continuously until at least 1835 (the last year in which I have seen the list) except for 1821. Initially he has no slaves. In 1823 he has two and the number increases steadily to 8 in 1835. The number of horses increases from 0 in 1920 to 6 in 1835. In 1835 he has a carryall on which he pays a tax of $1. The tax for a slave is $.25 and for a horse $.06. He is always in the northern district.
WHO IS HIS FATHER?
Jordan Reese is the only older man available to be his father. For John and William we have lists of their children, and David married several years after Joseph was born. However, Jordan probably left Bedford Co. for Tennessee in about 1814. It seems unlikely that one of his sons would have returned to Virginia.
