1854
Name: City of St. Louis vs. Shands, Joseph
Cause of Action: Violation of City Ordinance
Case Summary: Shands was indicted for selling 50 barrels of flour without inspection. He was fined $100. Supreme court reversed, ruling that the ordinance did not include flour manufactured within St. Louis.
"The Operative Miller", Vol 15, page 579:
Mr. Alex H. Smith, an old time miller of St. Louis, familiarly known as "Uncle Alex", at a recent gathering of the St. Louis Millers' Club gave a few reminiscences of the city, including a history of the old time mills:
The O'Fallon Mill, at the junction of Fourth and Fifth streets, now Broadway, was built and torn down and rebuilt by Joseph G. Shands, and operated under several succeeding owners until bought with other properties by the Gould railways for right-of-way to connect the Iron Mountain and Pacific roads by surface tracks, but the city refusing the necessary grant, the connection was not made; meantime, however, the mill was torn down.
