CENSUS:

In 1840 Benjamin, all his brothers except David, and his father are missing from the census.

In 1845 in a Mississippi state census B. L. Hitt (2,3), Marshall Hitt (3,4), and Benjamin Hitt (1,1) are in Newton Co. There are 2 males and 3 females in B. L. Hitt's household.

He is not in the Slave Schedule. His brother Marshil Hit and his nephew Daniel M. Hit live at 754/769 and 755/770, respectively. Emma in 1860 may or may not be the same person as Lorenne in 1850.

The following tract in Sumter Co., Alabama was patented to Benjamin L. Hitt:

On July 16, 1838 he bought 200 acres from Daniel Hitt (patented to him 5/15/1837) for $1400 (C/309), and the following day he paid $3425 for 560 acres (C/309). The 200 acre tract was subsequently bought at auction by Charles Hitt for $350.80 (E/175), and in December 1839 Benjamin L. sold the 560 acres for $1400 (E/331).

On 5/1/1860 a 43.72 acre tract was patented to Benjamin L. Hitt in S4 T8N R13E in Newton Co., Mississippi.

On 9/1/1848 a 39.96 acre tract (NWNE S11 T8N R13E) in Newton Co., Mississippi was patented to a Benjamin Hitt. The patentee may have been Benjamin L. Hitt or it may have been his father Rev. Benjamin Hitt. The tract adjoins a larger 160 acre tract patented to Marshall Hitt.
