At a court for Bedford County at the courthouse July 26, 1813:

The court doth appoint Jonathan Cundiff guardian to Pamelia Reese Sophia Reese Wm W. Reese Silas Reese Benjamin F. Reese & John Reese being of full age for the purpose made choice of the said Jonathan Cundiff as his guardian who gave bond & Security according to Law.

The wording of the guardianship order suggests that John is the oldest child and is the only one old enough to choose his guardian.

On October 29, 1821 John Reese of Bedford Co., Virginia sells to Jonathan Cundiff of the same place for $500 all the title that he holds in the land belonging to the estate of his father William Reese, dec'd, as a legatee, which tracts are in Bedford and Franklin Counties. The tract in Bedford Co. contains 418 acres and is the land on which his father lived and died, and the tract in Franklin Co. contains 230 acres. One of the witnesses is William W. Reese. Bedford Co., Virginia Probate Records at FamilySearch, Will Book 10, pages 339-342, images 421-23:

Pursuant to an order of the County Court of Bedford Co. at the January 1841 term of said court, 3 commissioners survey a tract of 429 1/4 acres of land situated in Bedford Co. on both sides of the Meador Branch of Goose Creek into 6 parts and report to the court on February 6, 1841. The dower of the widow Mary C. Cundiff late Mary C. Reese contains 134 1/2 acres. It and the following 5 lots are described by metes and bounds. Three lots are assigned to the heirs of Jonathan Cundiff, dec'd, who was the grantee of William W. Reese, Silas G. Reese, and John Reese. William Reese departed this life leaving 6 children, and a daughter Permelia sometime after his death also departed this life without leaving heirs.

On October 5, 1841 Sophia S. Thurman of Bedford Co., Virginia purchases for $400 the land alotted to Benjamin F. Reese, dec'd, of the lands of Wm. Reese, dec'd. It is a tract in Bedford Co. of 46 acres, more or less, and the adjoining property owners are Justus Hancock on the north and west, Franklin Headon on the south, and Cundiff legatees and Sophia S. Thurman on the east and northeast. The grantors are

1) John Reese and Mary, his wife, of Shelby Co., Illinois by his attorney William W. Reese of Bedford Co.,
2) William W. Reese and Mary, his wife, of Bedford Co.,
3) Richard J. Cundiff, Mary S. Cundiff, and Mary S. Cundiff (widow) of Bedford Co., and
4) Silas G. Reese of Franklin Co., Virginia.

On October 5, 1841, John Reese and Mary Reese his wife of Shelby Co., Illinois by their attorney William W. Reese; William W. Reese and Mary his wife, Sophia S. Thurman, and Mary S. Cundiff all of Bedford Co.; Virginia, Silas G. Reese of Franklin Co., Virginia; and Christopher C. Cundiff and Sarah his wife of Rockingham Co., North Carolina sell to Richard J. Cundiff for and in consideration of $750 to them in hand paid, subject to a deduction of R. J. Cundiff's interest in the same, a tract of land in Bedford Co. being the dower allotted to the widow of Jonathan Cundiff, dec'd, and also being part of the landed estate of William Reese, dec'd, and containing 130 acres, more or less. It is bounded on the south by the land allotted and conveyed to the legatees of Jonathan Cundiff, dec'd, and on the west and north by the lines of William W. Reese. It also adjoins the land of Wesley Hackworth and Elijah B. Turner. (Book 30, page 431, image 303/353) [The deed is signed by only one Mary S. Cundiff, presumably the daughter and not the widow.]

On August 27, 1810 John Newlow, Wm Leftwich, and John Clayton return to the court an appraisal of the estate of William Reese, dec'd. Total value is $2220.88. Cash on hand $366. Debts due to the estate $180.68. Many items are listed, including a family Bible valued at $5. Far and away the more valuable item is a Negro girl called Tamer and her child Nancy, $400. Lots of tools and household items. Five horses, about 20 head of cattle, 3 sheep. William Reese was probably a manufacturer of gunpowder because 342 pounds of gunpowder ($184.68) and 471 pounds of saltpeter ($117.75) are in the inventory.

A report of the sale is dated October 25, 1810 (Will Book 3, pages 254-56, images 189-90). Polly Reese buys most of the items, including the gunpowder and saltpeter. Other buyers buy mostly animals.
